Mashed Potatoes during post-op diet?

Mashed potatoes have a lot of carbs.  For me, carbs trigger cravings, so I won't eat them.  I eat mashed cauliflower as a replacement, and I added protein powder to them when I was early out to get my protein in.  Do check with your nutritionist about timing as to when you can add potatoes or cauliflower to your diet, as programs vary a lot.

good luck,

Carol

depends on your plan.  If low carbing it then too mamy carbs.  If not doing low carb I would still limit during weight loss.  For my carb sources I chose veggies, fruit and a little whole grain.  Mashed potatoes go down WAY to easy.  I had a bite very rarely.

Serves no purpose.  You can eat so little in the beginning you are much better off eating things with protien like cottage cheese, yogurt....

I actually prefer mashed microwave-steamed cauliflower now.. Steam it in an open glass bowl till soft (keeps it from being too wet) then into the food processor or hit it with an immersion blender stick.. add whatever fat/liquid/flavor- cream, greek yog, cheese, broth.. early out- protein powder for sure- maybe even the Unjury chicken broth flavor? (let it cool before adding protein powder or you will get chunks.. reheat after it's blended..) You get double benefit- some filler, something comforting, and protein.

The potato family is about the best real food source of potassium that we have, and since potassium isn't supplemented to any meaningful degree in our OTC supplements, they earn a place amongst the wide variety of foods on our menu. I never counted carbs (nor did my wife when she went through this a few years ago) and weight loss was a fast as I could have wanted it. With any sane calorie limitation consistent with weight loss needs, our diets are inherently low carb and low fat, so there is usually little benefit to taking things to greater extremes.
