Xyla (artificial sweetner)- can it make you sick?

Morning,

I was wondering if anyone knew if Xyla can make one ill (cramping, diarrea).  Not sure if it is a coincidence that this came along after the first time using it or not.  Thanks- and my apologies about knowing a bit more about how I am feeling at the moment than I normally share.

Xyla is xylitol.

Here's what I found:

Reported Side Effects of Xylitol

Xylitol seems to be tolerated quite well, with most side effects being fairly minor. Like all sugar alcohols, xylitol can have a laxative effect, especially if consumed at high doses. This can cause diarrhea and gas. Just like with fiber intake, the laxative effects of this product can be minimized if you increase your intake gradually. Most people will not notice any laxative effect from the small doses found in chewing gums.   Very high doses of xylitol given by IV have been reported to cause high uric acid levels in the blood (which could increase the risk of kidney stones), changes in liver function tests (which could indicate stress to the liver), and high acid levels in the blood. These problems are not predicted to occur for other routes of xylitol use, such as in gum or candy.   Extremely high doses of xylitol given to laboratory animals for extended periods of time may increase the risk of tumor growth. This has not been shown to be the case in humans and is not predicted to be a problem, unless extremely high doses are taken for quite awhile.   It is possible, but not likely, for people to be allergic to xylitol, especially if substandard purification techniques are used, since xylitol is obtained from plants (usually birch trees). Let your healthcare provider know if you develop signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
  • Itching
  • Hives
  • A rash
  • Wheezing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of the mouth or throat.
Allergic reactions to this product also may cause mouth sores.

Thanks Karik.  No more of that in the morning coffee... sheesh.

FYI.  Many people are sensitive to fake sugars, not just Xylatol.  Be careful.  Keep the use of them to a minimum.  Our bodies were not meant to digest anything fake or chemically changed.  Or even things that "make things sweet" but have no calories.  Lots of studies of their negative effects.

I know.  I am a total crackhead when it comes to sweetners though.  It was the one bad habit I did not successfully quit during this entire process.  Today is a bit motivating for me to try again though!

I only use Truvia (stevia), which is a natural. It comes from a plant. It took me a while to get used to, but I like it now. Plus, I really don't use a whole lot. I use 1/4 tsp in a cup of half herbal tea and half heated light soy milk. YUM.

Perfect timing - I got sick for the first time yesterday and it was directly after eating some (too many) xylitol breath mints.  Ugh - never again!  I have other xylitol mints that I tolerate fine, but I limit the #.
