Dizziness?

VSG on 06/12/13
For the past couple of weeks, I have been dizzy on changing position pretty much every time. Not in a vertigo, room-spinning sense, but in a headrush, everything-turns-white sense. I also almost passed out at the gym on Sunday during a cardio workout (scared my trainer on that one).

I thought it was dehydration so I have upped my fluids for about the past 4-5 days with no change. I've continued my daily multi. Time for new labs, I think. I just set a doctor's appt for Friday.

What else have you found to cause dizziness? At last check, my blood pressure was totally normal - 120/80. Perhaps I will see if I can find a DIY blood pressure cuff somewhere. I saw references to iron when I googled. I just checked my last labs and didn't see that value. What else would cause this? Otherwise, I feel great, with energy to spare.

Until Friday, I will wrap myself in bubble wrap and carry on.

Thanks,
Laurie

Your lack of iron would have shown yo to be anemic.  But taking iron supplements constipate most people.  When I have the dizziness you described it was a drop in blood sugar or a drop in blood pressure.  Next time it happens try a few sips of orange juice.   Of course follow up with your Dr

Are you taking blood pressure meds or a diuretic?  If so, they might need to be adjusted.  Or if you haven't eaten lately, maybe low blood sugar?  Maybe have some greek yogurt or fruit before you work out?

Other than that, ear infection?

No meds at all at this point. Only my vitamins. My ears have been clogged on and off for months (before this started) but no pain. My trainer reminded me I needed to eat before our sessions, but this happens on an empty stomach as well as a full one.

I haven't checked my BS lately. I will try that.

Here's what the Mayo Clinic says:

  • Inflammation in the inner ear. Signs and symptoms of inflammation of your inner ear (acute vestibular neuritis) include the sudden onset of intense, constant vertigo that may persist for several days, along with nausea, vomiting and trouble with balance. These symptoms may be so severe that you have to stay in bed. When associated with sudden hearing loss, this condition is called labyrinthitis. Fortunately, vestibular neuritis generally subsides and clears up on its own. But, early medical treatment and vestibular rehabilitation therapy can be helpful in speeding recovery.

I have had that before. It feels like really bad bedspins all the time. It was miserable. My latest thing doesn't feel like that (thank goodness). It feels more lightheaded than dizzy. Maybe I have used the wrong word. I also went back through my labs looking for iron levels and I cannot find them anywhere so I don't know what my baseline is. My period has resumed in recent months so it is possible that there is some anemia at play there.

Thanks for gathering this info for me!

I would get my blood sugar checked ASAP. This happen to me the first week out of surgery. My blood sugar was very VERY low. It was 38 in the hospital even!!! I was almost in diabetic comma stage. My surgeon made me drink the REAL Gatorade for a few days. Now from time to time, I drink G2.

My last fasting lab BS value was 62, so that is possible because it was last checked 3 months ago. Preop, I never had to check BS, so I'm going through mental lists of friends to see who might have a blood sugar monitor that we could use to check. Good call. Thanks!

That has happened to me when I've dropped my carbs too low.  It was pretty scary!

Hmmm. This message made me go back and check my carbs on MFP. The highest they've been in the past 30 days is 63. Typically they average around 40. Perhaps between now and Friday I will bump them up a touch and see if it helps. Thanks!
