Support group
So my hospital is an hour away and I have been wanting to go to a support group. I found one near me from a different hospital. It was a positive experience. They have a quest speaker each month. This month it was a PT guy and he gave some great information about building your core and how our balance can be off after weight loss. It was a very supportive group of people. I started helping someone who had sleeve and has been stress eating. I have worked in mental health for 11 years and taught classes for five of them. They liked what I was saying and suggested maybe I be a guest speaker. I will see I have some great ideas for them. I just wanted to share that this was a good support group experience. I hear so many bad ones.
That is wonderful that you have found a support group. I don't think it matters where you go as long as you go and you feel like you are supported. I go to a support group when I can but I really don't get much out of it. There isn't much talk about what people are going through unless you go early or stay late and you get into a one on one conversation with someone.
Sounds poorly run to me. In this one it was two hours and the first hour was the speaker and the second hour was information the facilitator gave and people sharing what was going on. She is a nurse so she was pretty knowledgable and has done some trainings.
You would be correct. Ours is run by a nurse also but there is not much sharing. The only guidance I got for eating after the surgery was to get 60 grams of protein each day. They do not push, they let excuses flow freely. I am glad I found this board because while everyone does not agree on how to get there, there is a lot of useful information here. I would have never thought it was possible to get to a healthy weight but after the success stories on this sight and being able to learn from those who have gone before me, I am going to make it! I didn't have to settle for a 60-80% weight loss. I am at 96% and will be 1 year out on the 19th. Life has happened and it has slowed me down but I am not stopping and I owe it to everyone who posts on this website!
That is awesome. Yeah the woman who was upset asked what should I do and she was offered some good advice. I liked that the nurse said it is the holidays so try to maintain and then start back to basics in the new year. I gave her some resources to use as well.
I'm working on finding a support group near me as well. The one at the hospital where I'm having my surgery sounds really great, but it's an hour away on Thursday nights and completely not feasible for me to work into my life. I found one through the forums here that might work, since it's in my town, but I have no idea if it's still active.
