So I met with my surgeon this morning to go over everything before surgery! I asked him what size sleeve he does and he said a 36! Is that a good size?

These are the sizes used in the U.S.  A 32 is sometimes believed to cause more GERD.  A 36 is still less than 1/2 inch in diameter. Your surgeon should be able to show you the size bougie that he will use

32 = .40"

34 = .425"

36 = .45"

38 = .476"

40 = .5"

46 = .57"

48 = .60"

That is a very typical size, so yes.  It would be considered a large sleeve if you were in the 40's or above, and 32 would be really small.  The most important consideration though, is how comfortable is your surgeon with that size.  Congrats on beginning your journey!

Listed bougie sizes have turned out to be a non accurate term as an indicator since surgeons tend to use them in a non-standardized way.......yes in general....smaller number.... smaller sleeve......

Eventual capacity is "the most important" part to this whole thing when considering restriction in this restrictive based procedure.

If you read enough and it's all here....... VSG patients end up with a wide range of capacity........

If/when you see the photo of the pens or actual bougie tools...... and it is presented as "miniscule" in difference.....

Why "can" the range of eventual capacity vary from 2-4oz. to 16oz. ?????????????????????????????????

That's not "miniscule"

Remember........ This surgery is really not about the actual WL........ It's about keeping the weight off that you lost.........!!!!!!

Think long term with short term goals......

I have a 36f & it serves me well.   Like frisco says, capacity later on is what counts because some surgeons do over-sew & tighten while some surgeons use it as a guide (I'm not good with this technical stuff).

In the pic that frisco is referring to, it shows my sleeve was originally created to be the size of a sharpie pen... I am 2.5 years out.  I can eat a lot more than that BUT the great news is the restriction is still there and when we eat the right foods, it treats us well as long as we do our part.

In my opinion, it's good.  Congrats on your sleeve date coming soon!!!

I didn't know there were different sizes! Maybe that is a bad thing? I thought I did my homework pretty well... Anyways, thanks, now I have a question to ask my surgeon!

Why do the surgeons not talk about this? I thought I did my homework too, but now I am wondering.  Why do you think this is not brought up in the information sessions etc...?

Per my surgical report, mine was a 32f.  As small as that may be, I can still get quite a bit of food in my stomach before I feel the restriction... which probably accounts for the fact I am such a slow loser.
