Slider foods

 Hi: To all

When the word slider foods are used it’s mostly referring to the Lap-band or pouch type surgeries. Some Nut would say it also may apply to the sleeve.

A slider food is one that can easily slide or slips through the narrow stoma opening in the Lap-band pouch or the RNY pouch. The sleeve is still in your own stomach, just smaller in size in the same shape of a banana, still having it’s pyloric sphincter so it works in a totally different way. Some of the foods that may be considered sliders are, milkshakes, malts and ice cream treats. Candies like chocolate and soft cheeses enter the pouch and melt, passing straight through into the small intestine without being digested. These foods have the ability of causing weight gain, dumping and vomiting. If you want to eat a piece of candy once in awhile have it after you’ve had a good healthy meal, no problem.

What I’ve learn from my Nut, is that WLS patients should try hard to eat foods that are slightly moist making them easier to swallow. Chips, crackers, nuts, popcorn and other dry and hard treats can get stock in your pouch.

As always you should check with you doctor and see what he or she thinks about sliders. I am not a doctor nor am I suggesting anyone try or use any of these methods, this is only plain and simple information.

May you Slide into the Losers bench.

Your Nut is on crack.  Dry foods such as chips and crackers are easily tolerated absolutely do not get stuck.  We don't have a pouch- totally different anatomy for us then the Rny.  My brother in law has the Rny and fears eating bread, because it gets stuck.  Nothing doing for use sleevers.  The closest I ever came is eating too fast and too much, but that is not the same as getting stuck, although still pretty miserable for a few hours and requiring days of reverting back to a full liquid diet for healing.  Yes, moist foods go down better- add a little mayo or something and it helps.  Slider foods for sleevers tend to be carb based- I can put down a lot of bread, chips, crackers, cookies, popcorn, etc.  In fact the only way I could eat 3,000 calories in a day is by eating predominantly these types of food.  Slider foods are very real for us sleevers, and need to be avoided or at the very least understood.

I have to say that I agree with HappyTeacher.  We don't have a pouch, and very few people with VSG dump (our intestines are re-routed).  I had a similar experience with my NUT - they have a "one size fits all" approach to WLS, which is just plain wrong IMHO.  I kept pointing out info in their literature that didn't apply to VSG - she admitted it, but it was just easier to give one plan to all.

My sliders are carbs - chips, popcorn, mashed potatoes.  When I had a lap band, I couldn't eat pasta or bread, which I can easily eat now with VSG.

With the VSG, the term "slider food" tends to be used about foods that we can eat a LOT of and not feel restriction.  Yes, those would include ice cream treats...but for me it's just about anything with sugar.  I have unfortunately tested this in the last couple weeks and found that I can slowly but surely but away many pieces of candy, cookies and cake-type breads without feeling restriction.  Unfortunately, I end up "hungry" very soon afterward and the carb-monster has been re-awakened.  I've spent the last 3 days de-carbing from some bad choices I made last week!

I started eating nuts at about 6 weeks out and have had popcorn on more than one occasion and never had problems with things getting "stuck".  The only "stuck" feeling I ever feel is if I take too big of a bite or I swallow too quickly without fully chewing a bite of food.

Sadly most things that are not protein, vegetables or raw fruit slide down pretty easily for me. The high carb things (even whole wheat)  when eaten alone, do not give me a feeling of restriction. Even though they make me feel a little bloated at times.  Restriction is a wonderful thing, but I must continue to weigh, measure and record everything I eat,  the good habits are what will keep the weight off.

BTW the intestines ore not rerouted in the VSG surgery.
