I was not on pills or shots, diet controlled prior to surgery, but my blood sugars went from the 140s to the 70s-80s about 36 hours after surgery. I haven't even bothered with checking my blood sugars because I'm hardly ingesting calories and carbs.

My dry skin hasn't changed at all. I doubt very much that it will get better. I've had dry skin since I was in my early 40s.

I was diagnosed officially be the endocrinologist just a few weeks prior to Vsg.  Consequently, I was not in treatment as he said the surgery would resolve.

  1. How long after your VSG surgery were you diabetes free? Immediately....
  2. Did you completely stop taking pills or shots for diabetes?  Wasn't taking them prior...
  3. If you had dry skin on your legs, arms or any other place did the dryness stop?  Skin is just as dry...
  4. If you had nerve damage from diabetes did it stop or did it get better?  No issues before....
  5. Did your bedroom life improve? Oh yes....
  6. Do you ever have low blood sugar and if you do how do you correct it? Yes, and it was a problem for 2 months post vsg.  Changes in my diet manages it quite nicely... it just took me a little time to figure it out.
  7. Do you still check your blood sugar on a daily bases? No, but I was for a few months post op.

I'm 2 weeks out & blood sugar was BAD right after but normal ever since. I test twice a day for now. As far as long term? Don't know yet. I'm excited to find out though.

I was an insulin dependent diabetic with an a1c of 12 at the time of surgery.  Immediately after surgery through three weeks post op i was medicine free.  My a1c has dropped to 7.

  • How long after your VSG surgery were you diabetes free? Have to lose more weight.  Almost there...
  • Did you completely stop taking pills or shots for diabetes?  No more shots,  down from 6 pills to two Metformin a day.
  • If you had dry skin on your legs, arms or any other place did the dryness stop?  Haven't had that problem...
  • If you had nerve damage from diabetes did it stop or did it get better?  I have had some improvement in one of my feet.
  • Did your bedroom life improve? Wasn't a problem for me...
  • Do you ever have low blood sugar and if you do how do you correct it?  No lows.
  • Do you still check your blood sugar on a daily bases?  No but I should.

Good Luck with your journey! It really did help my sugars... to a life saving extent.

Day after surgery my sugar levels were normal and have been ever since.  I am off the pills and test twice daily.  No lows yet, but I'm only five weeks out. Good luck.

I was sleeved on 10/30/13.  I had been diagnosed as a Type 2 Diabetic for 6 1/2 years.

  1. How long after your VSG surgery were you diabetes free?  I am considered in "remission" currently.  I was given that  diagnosis 2 weeks after surgery.
  2. Did you completely stop taking pills or shots for diabetes? I stopped taking my Metformin the night before surgery.  I was told not to take it again since.  (My original dose was 500 mg Metformin twice a day)
  3. If you had dry skin on your legs, arms or any other place did the dryness stop? To some extent.  Right after surgery and about 3 weeks out it was a lot worse. But my dr. said it was because of  trying to get all my fluids in.  I have been using Nubian Raw Shea Butter lotion and since I now exceed the recommended fluid amount,  it has improved greatly.
  4. If you had nerve damage from diabetes did it stop or did it get better?  Didn't have any nerve damage.
  5. Did your bedroom life improve?  Wasn't an issue.
  6. Do you ever have low blood sugar and if you do how do you correct it? Haven't yet, but was told to use a Glucose tube (only 1/2 of the tube, though)  just as I would of pre surgery for low sugar, then call my surgeon's office.
  7. Do you still check your blood sugar on a daily bases? After surgery, I was asked to check daily.  After my 4 week appt., they told me to check 3 times a week.  Now, I am just to check once or twice a week.  Btw, my blood sugar has ran consistenly 78-89.  I was recently in the hospital and they checked my blood sugar via daily labs and they were between 80-82.

I was on slow release insulin and byetta and 2000 mg metiformine at the start of my journey, I lost 75 lb pre op and got my a1c down from 7.5 to 5.8

after surgery I was taken off insulin and byetta , just taking metiformin and my a1c went up to 6.5

I check my sugar twice a day

I was told that when I lose more weight I might get off metiformin

my surgeon and endocrinologist both said that  since I was diabetic more than 12 years and on insulin more than 1 year there was a good chance I might always be diabetic but it would be much improved

to improve dry skin you need to increase liquids and good fat

Tenacious,

you gave us no info about you.   It depends on how long you were diabetic, insulin dependent or not.   I was type 2 for 25 yrs.   insulin dependent the last two yrs before surgery.   Was on 150 units a day now 20 units a day plus 2000 ml metforin.   I've lost 92 lbs so on my case this is probably as good as it gets.  Best of luck to you.
