Do I need to purchase an abdominal binder for post-op VSG

I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row while I wait for a surgery date. I've read a bit about binders but I haven't found any definite yeas or neighs about them and now I am wondering if I should purchase one and bring it with me to the hospital?

Has anyone any info about this?

I did not use one and do no feel I would have needed it. I do not think it is necessary, in fact, I think it may cause you more discomfort to use one by taking it off and putting it back on repeatedly. It may bother your incisions, which probably should get more air to heal....just my opinion, but I'm certainly not a doc or expert. Does your doctor recommend that you get one?

They put one on me at the hospital, I did wear it home but did not have to use it any longer than that.

I didn't use one or need one. I think it would have messed with my incisions.

I'd say no.  Purchased one and didn't need it.  Save for $ for protein shakes!

I just asked for one in the hosp and they gave me one. It was nice for the first few days but wasn't needed or necessary after day two or three. If you want one, just ask.

I swore by mine and have recommended it to others. I feel that it really prevented tugging/soreness afterward.

My Dr put it on me after surgery. I loved it. It held everything tight and I did not have any pain at all. I wore it after I got home too.  I think it really made a difference with me getting in and out of bed or up out of a chair. It had to be tighten up as the swelling went down, but was very comfortable.

Took it off to shower and then had to have my hubby help put it back on,  it did not get in the way of anything, like going to bathroom, it did not bother my incisions either.

I have to say when my Dr first told me about it, I was thinking "oh no" but I was proven wrong.

REMEMBER: Ask your Dr before your purchase one, they may have a reason they would not want you to wear one. Every center is different in how they do things.

Best of Luck to you!!!!!

The hospitals always used to give one with abdominal surgery.  Then about ten years ago, most stopped because of cost cutting.  I had the surgeon write me a prescription and insurance paid for mine.

It gives a lot of support to the back and makes getting up and down from bed and moving around much easier.  I used mine for about two weeks, until I felt much stronger and until getting up and down was easy.

I found that it helped when I went back to work, but I lean over students all day... doesn't seem like much, but it is right where the soreness is. I used a decent spanx bought at Costco at the time.  I now have a medical grade version that would probably be a little overkill for the vsg (used for abdominoplasty).
