I believe all handicapped parking spaces nationwide have signs in front of them (or on the adjacent building) as well as paint markings on the pavement. If there is a sign there, he got you fair and square.  If there is no sign or marking on the adjacent building, take photos of the space and the snow cover and submit them when you fight the ticket. Virtually all public places have one or more handicap spaces right next to the entrance and it's been that way for about 20 years now.

As for his attitude, maybe his mom is handicapped and has trouble finding parking places because other people park in them.  You never know. Unfortunately, even cops have bad days.

I agree.

And having to be a cop out in this weather is probably even worse.

If I had done this, I'd pay the ticket with no argument. Whether it was an accident or not, I still broke the law.

My question is...with the roads as bad as they are in Northern IN (I live in Indy) right now and as cold as it is, he had nothing better to do than to write you a ticket for parking in a handicapped spot? REALLY? Like ensuring the safety of those driving in these conditions?

excellent point.  My ex husband is a cop, and on bad weather days, you really have to do something completely messed up for him to get out and so something about it... and if you do, (make him get out in bad weather), you're going to pay!

I dont think this guy was looking for something to do... it must've been damn obvious.

I'm a police officer and if you were treated the way you describe then that is unacceptable.  I encourage you to call the police department, ask for a supervisor and make a complaint.  We are here to serve the public while enforcing laws.  Whether you pay or fight the ticket won't matter to the police officer because it will be handled by your city court attorneys and the judge.  I'm sorry you were treated that way.

i cant believe you'd encourage her to file a complaint against another officer.   Are you new to the career?

If you're NOT a rookie, then you should know that people always feign innocence and will swear on their mamas lives to all who will listen how innocent they are.

Sometimes, their complaints are legit, but most of the time it's bull****   I dont know if this poster's claims are legit, or as legit as she says, but they're not very serious either.  Certainly not worth filing a complaint over.   Do you work the street?  Would you get out of YOUR patrol car for the hell of it in snow, sub-zero temps, and wind just to annoy an annonymous civilian  ? come on now.  There's more to it.

When I was 18 I cut school and went to the beach. IT was DEAD. No one there. had no money to pay quarters for the meter, so I parked in handicap spot. There were like 20 of them, all empty. Got the $250 ticket. Suuuucked.

He shouldn't have been a jerk. But let that shiz roll. If the sign wasn't visible, I would fight it.

Hi there,

I work in Parma and live in Cleveland, Ohio.  I left work at 11pm, went to the grocery store near work and then was headed home.  While still in Parma, I was stopped for my license sticker...i honestly hadnt had time to get  my new one.  I apologized, was very pleasant and handed him my dl and ins when he asked.  Badge 28 was a penis...He had the audacity to ask me if I lived in Cleveland, what was I doing in Parma...in a not so pleasant tone...like I wasnt allowed in his area...which I grew up in btw. Im also much older than him...no respect in general with this one.

I explained the above.  When I pulled out my dl and ins card, I know thi***** saw my wifes badge...Yes, i am wife of a 21 yr police vet officer in Cleveland.  He told me being married to a police officer didnt entitle me to break the law.  LMAO im like HUH??? Im as straight as ya get!

He ended telling me, after he ran my plates/license, that I better get my sticker in the next few days as he'd be looking for me and would for sure ticket me then.  OMG jackass!

Now I will say, Parma doesnt have a great rep with their officers.  Still, being a jackass is un necessary in any capacity.

Id let his superiors know and id fight the ticket.  Thats just me tho.
