How do I liquid diet?

I start my liquid diet in five days and I'm having trouble thinking through the logistics.  :P

My plan is up to five protein shakes a day plus all the broths and clear liquids I want - specifically, coffee, tea, crystal ligh****er, and sugar free things.

What does this look like in practice?  Do I drink a protein shake whenever I get hungry?  And only resort to broth if I've had five shakes?  Or do I drink shakes and then drink broth when I'm bored of shakes?  I'm probably making this WAY more complicated than it needs to be, but I want to have some sort of clue about how this will play out.

If you had a pre-op liquid diet similar to mine, what did you actually find yourself consuming each day?!

My liquid diet will be 3 shakes a day made from 2 scoops of Bariatric Advantage protein powder mixed with 8 oz skim milk.  I can also have 300 calories a day from broth, light yogurt, sugar free applesauce, sugar free popsicles, and crystal light.  They also said I could mix diet orange or rootbeer soda with vanilla protein powder to make floats but that would count as one of my shakes.  They suggest drinking the shakes as you would meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and then use the other items as fill-ins when you need it.

I would think you could do something similar with your plan that way you get a consistent level of protein every 3-4 hours which should ward off any real hunger pains you may have.

Hope this helps.

I'm going on my 5th week of liquids. My plan is: 2 scoops shake for breakfest, lunch and dinner and then 1 scoop snack 3 times a day. My plan doesnt allow to mix shakes with anything bu****er, but I am allowed to have 2 cups of green veggies for lunch and dinner with my shakes. Also, im allowed to have as much crystal light, broth or water when I want.

Wow!  That's a super long liquid diet.  Do you know why you've got such a long one?

Thanks for the insight!

Yes, its very long. With my doctor they require a 4 week liquid diet for people with a BMI under 50 and a 6 week liquid diet for people with a BMI over 50. Lucky me, my BMI was 52....so there you go. 6 Weeks for me. Its been brutal at times. I think within the last week, I've finally gotten in my groove. Its been easier lately. Its a long time though. Im envious of all the people I see with a 1 week or 10 day or even 2 week liquid diet. I realize its all for the best though. I'm in the home stretch!

You are so close to finishing :D  And I'm sure you'll be grateful for the weight you've lost pre-op!!  My doc has 7 days for smaller people and 10 days for bigger people, I don't know the exact cut off, just that I'm one of the lucky ones with 10 days.  I have been swapping out breakfast and lunch for shakes for the last month or so, and that has been really useful for me. :)

Sounds like I have the same plan as you - 10 days of protein drinks and clear liquids

I'm on day 2 right now.  I am using fatsecret to track my nutritional info.  I also got Fair Life Skim milk which has more protein and less carbs and low/no lactose - it is cow's milk, but filtered.

I would have protein when I was starting to feel hungry - before the ravenous state hit!

This is how yesterday went:

wake up - drink water

make a protein shake before I go (made with skim milk and protein powder) almost 40g protein in this one

get to work - water - have some SF jello

10:30 - another protein shake (ready to drink GNC total Lean)  14oz so for me this counts as about 1.5 of my 6 daily required

water

12 - broth

more water

2 - more broth

4 - another protein shake (ready to drink GNC total Lean)

6 - broth while the family eats food

7 - milk and protein powder - about 25g protein

8 - water

9 - water and bedtime

Here's my stats for yesterday

880 cal

123g protein

68g carbs

15g fat

Mine was the same as yours except I got 4 protein shakes a day plus clear liquids. So this is how most of my days went:

B: Shake in the car on my way to work

L: Shake

S: Popsicle/SF jello

D:Shake

S: Shake

And in between I would just drink water pretty much. If I were you, I would probably fit my extra shake in between lunch and dinner. Of course you dont have to do it this way, just a suggestion. Your idea of drinking shakes whenever you are hungry is good too as long as you get in all 5. Maybe it would even work better. Good luck!
