Psych Eval, Ongoing...

I am getting ready to make an appointment for my psych evaluation. Just wondering if anyone is continuing on with psychologist visits even after the evaluation? I have some baggage from a bad marriage that I would like to work through (should have talked with someone years ago since my divorce in 1997); have recently had some issues with an overbearing coworker, and I have this fear I might slip back into my old eating habits after surgery. I think monthly visits with someone would do me a world of good.

I saw a psychologist for my eval prior to surgery and I started seeing a therapist a few weeks before surgery. (Two different people in my case, the psych eval location was almost 45 minutes away from my home!  My therapist is a 7 minute drive.)  I see my therapist once a week and she is AMAZING.  I actually look forward to my appointments which still amazes me since I have had bad therapy experiences in the past.

My best advice is to find someone you click with.  If you don't click with the first one you try, try again with someone new :)

Thanks for the response GwenMo. I hope I can find someone I am comfortable with. It's due time and I feel like after I get the surgery and I get my body together, the mind needs to be together too :)

That's sort of how I felt too.  I figure that I should do this change thing right if I was going to do it at all!  My life has done a total 180 since 12 months ago.  I love it :D

I didn't with the band.  I "had" to see the therapist for six visits for revision.  I have been seeing her every since and it has made a big difference in my journey with the sleeve.

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

I find therapy invaluable to the whole WLS process. And oddly, vice versa.

I've been in therapy a long time, and learned a lot about myself. I wanted and still want to deal with and move through the issues that cause me to overeat in the first place, and I had hoped to be able to do that before surgery became a necessity. That didn't happen, but I think that going through the surgery process itself has caused a lot of issues, realizations, thoughts, feelings, etc. to arise that I couldn't get to any other way.

Highly recommend it.

I see a psychologist every other week, even before my psych eval for the sleeve. She is awesome and has helped me through so much. She helped me with my decision to have the surgery and I will probably see her forever, just to stay on top of any stressors or eating issues. Good for you for recognizing this. Best of luck!!

I made a decision to see a therapist every few weeks through my first year post op and then regularly touch base after a year. He leads several WLS support groups here and understands the process. I have asked him to help me learn some new tools so I don't go back to my food "issues".

I knew I needed additional support and feel really pleased I have him on my "team".

Thanks everyone, I am so looking forward to talking with someone on a regular basis. I usually vent to my sister and one of my coworkers that I trust. But I want to try and find out why I feel so inadequate at work and sometimes personally, and a professional will help me so much! Thanks for the posts :)
