What shall I return to the Lord for all his bounty to me?
I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord, I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful ones.
O Lord, I am your servant; I am your servant, the child of your serving girl. You have loosed my bonds. -- Psalm 116:12-16
Thanks so much for such a detailed description of your experience. I like how you are quite obviously "in charge" of what's going on with your body. It's really helpful to people like me who are just starting. My surgery is next month. I was impressed with how much control you seem to have over your calorie intake. My question is what calorie counting tool have you found to be the most effective to use? Is there a website with food/calorie charts that you have used? I'm getting down to the nitty gritty now in planning for next month and onward so if you have advice on how you've managed your food I'd be interested to know. Thanks and all the best to you!
Thanks for the question. When I was on the preop side of the fence, I couldn't believe that managing food and calories would be easy, but it is, kind of. I track everything in My Fitness Pal (which is where the graphs came from). I weigh and measure everything, religiously. That is a huge key to success. It has nutritional info for just about anything I need in it, or I can enter it myself. It's a mobile phone app and also available via the web. As for managing calories, I just followed doc's orders/plan. The combination of this + tracking keeps me in the rails.
As far as managing food, you will find that you think more about food after surgery than you ever did beforehand. You may get to the point where you feel all you do is worry about food, and it's sort of true. I think it is just the level of mindfulness required to be successful that makes people feel that way. Eventually, the planning and eating part becomes fairly routine, and if you manage it right, you adopt the mindset of eating to live, not living to eat as I did before.
Feel free to ask any questions you have here or via PM. Good luck!
