Carbs?
It all depends on how much of a mindfuck the idea of no carbs ever again is to you. I'm not a fan of deprivation, for it plays with my head and it will be all I think about. This whole "lifestyle change" (wincing, for I hate that term) should be one of balance instead of deprivation
I eat my food in a particular order. I always finish my protein, then move on to a few bites of veggies, but I always save a bite or two for something "naughty". The naughty item could be potatoes, bread, or cake. It's my choice, and since I only have room for a few bites, I'm not going to go butt-wild with it. At the end I'm completely satisfied.

Carbs and sugars are my personal demons ... and I've worked hard to get a healthier relationship with them. I have been following an Atkins diet for 9 weeks (pre-op qualifications) and have found that limiting carbs to 20-25 grams a day for 2 weeks resulted in almost ZERO craving for them! yes, that's right. And I've lost 45 lbs in that time as well. I encourage you to speak to a nutritionist or dietician to find the right plan for you.
Never, zero, none are dangerous words - they might set you up to feel you have 'failed' should you have some. And you will. I've tasted a bit of cake, had two bites of bread, 1/4 cup of rice. But they were choices and I was satisfied. Using this time to get ready for life after WLS is my goal and so far I've succeeded well beyond my expectations.
Good luck to you,
Thanks everyone for the responses I feel like I've learned something and that's what I want to do is learn as much as I can before my surgery since this is my 1st surgery. I still think I'm gonna keep my carbs low and see how it affects me after surgery. And I've heard about a lot of people not depriving themselves of certain things and that sounds great, but I don't think I could do or would want to only because I tend to already feel bad when I eat something I shouldn't. Again thank you! Sam
I think it really depends on the person. For me, for example, carbs didn't get me to where I was a year ago - eating excessive amounts of everything did. I do avoid processed foods as much as possible, because I think this is a healthier and more sustainable way of eating, but that's what works well for me. I don't seem to have the problem that some people have where eating carbs at all causes cravings for more carbs, so that helps inform my choices.
I think the most important part of this process, food-wise, is finding a way of eating that you can sustain for the rest of your life, and that is a healthy one (physically and mentally). For you, if that involves cutting out all non-veg carbs, then that's the way for you.

Another vote for depends...
During my weight loss phase I dealt with low blood sugar, so carbs were essential. I alternated 30 net carbs and 15 net carbs eating 6-7 times per day- all sleever friendly choices.
Now after succussfully maintaining for 2 years I find myself back in the prediabetic range. Time for me to limit carbs- of which I have been failing miserably at.
So- depends.
