Question
How do you decide on what kind of dr you need to talk to? Like should I see a therapist, psychiatrist, psychologist? What's the difference. I just want to talk to someone about the root problems I have with food and why I turned to food in the first place (post surgery).
You should be looking for a therapist or a psychologist. (Psychiatrists prescribe meds, the others can't.)
For me, I started with my insurance company's website and printed out the list of mental health providers that were within 25 miles of me. I sorted the list by distance and started with the closest one and worked my way through it until I found someone I clicked with.
You could also try asking your PCP or surgeon for a recommendation of a therapist.

It helps me immensely. It's good to have someone to vent to who doesn't love me. My therapist is super good at giving me ideas and suggestions of things to try and I feel a lot better after talking with her. :)
She's an important part of my Obesity Recovery Team.

Mine is a therapist (PsyD-Doctor of Psychology). She works with the bariatric clinic that I had my surgery through, and deals with people who have eating disorders and body image issues. If you dealt with a bariatric clinic for your program/surgery, you might want to check to see if they can recommend someone.

You'll pay a lot more for a psychologist and they tend to specialize in testing. I would go with a Licensed Mental Health Provider (LMHP) or a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). The initials may be different in your state. Probably more important is to find someone who has a lot of experience with eating disordered behavior and who is strong in cognitive behavior theory. Those two things are key. You don't need to spend hours in an office going through Freudian psychoanalysis :-(
