Extra skin

Hi all!

I am a newbie here and only 3 plus months out....but I have a question about extra skin. In your own experience do you feel that some of your extra skin bounced back into shape after time? I have heard a couple of folks say after a year...but all the sagginess is sort of getting to me today. (I still love my WLS and my energy level).

I did have a little bounce-back. I've got plenty of hanging skin, especially on my arms and legs (well, really everywhere), but looking back at pictures I can tell that some of it tightened up with time. Exercise, especially weight lifting, will help the appearance a lot.

Not really.  Sorry.

Much does depend on your age, sex and weight at the time of the WLS, tho.

I think it depends as the other posts said..but when you loose a huge amount.. seems to me your going to have  excess skin.. I lost pretty slowly( about 11 lbs a month) during my loss period after my distal RNY. i also exercised doing cardio and resistance 4 x days a week. I think this helped some areas,,but i did have 12 lbs of skin removed between my tummy, arms and surrounding areas. I lost 170 lbs.I was 35 wqen i had my rny.

I also know the post weight loss people are making up the largest population of reconstructive surgery now.

Hope that helps.

Thank you all for your comments. I have fair skin which I think doesn't really bounce back well, and I was considered a lightweight going into this but I don't think the yoyo stuff probably helped my skin either....I am also over 50 which it seems like younger folks may get more bounce back. I am exercises and moisturizing....I just know that I probably will not be able to afford ps.

I had thought my tummy would be really bad....but it actually isn't as bad as I thought it would be....so I most likely will not even be able to get it fixed and covered by insurance....guess I will need to play the lottery!

thanks though!

hi deb

well here goes with the skin issue.  my tummy isnt so bad, i hate the way my arms and thighs look.  i dont think i can afford plastic surgery, but i am going for a consult tomorrow.

i have had some bounce back in the two years since my surgery, i lost 122 pounds by the way. i will be 60 in November.

so its hard to say.  also being so early out, its hard to say where u will end up with the skin issue.

but to be honest, ill take my wrinkles and keep the weight loss, cause i love the new me

hugs, jacki

Yes, shopping is so much fun and I have tons of energy that I don't remember ever having before...that part is wonderful.

Plus I feel more "bouncy" if that is a word. Thank you...it will probably be 2 years or more before I can do anything anyway....

Good luck on your consult. I have some friends in support group who have loved their ps...

As more time has passed my skin has improved more and more... also the more Ive worked on toning and strength training that has helped as well - for me the skin has been much slower than the weight loss - I would say the past 6-8 months have yeilded the biggest changes... while I still want plastic surgery at least what I have currently is looking decent... I may not even need everything I originally thought - woo hoo!

At 38 I can say that I'm am glad that there are good "girdles" out there.  Until I am able to get the surgery, the girdles help smooth everything out and make your clothes fit that much better.  Lost 115 lbs and tons of loose skin.  I am also fair skinned and exercise helped a bit but there is still much more that needs to be removed.
