VITAMINS - daily regimens needed

I am 3 years post op and doing fine, up a few pounds but back on track and started losing again.  My mother is in the process of getting surgery - she's started the 6 month waiting period and should have surgery by the end of the calendar year.  She's confused about what vitamins she needs to take on a daily basis.  Per my surgeons recommendation, I take the Optisource (orange, chewable, 4 pills per day) that includes pretty much everything, as well as a sublingual B12.  However, her surgeon does not reccomend Optisource and wants her taking the individual vitamins.  Since I've been taking Optisource for 3 years, I don't even know what vitamins people take each day, how many times per day, what kind to buy, etc. I may also consider switching to taking the individual vitamins if it makes sense to do so.

I'm looking for insight from all of you - what (specific) vitamins do you take each day? What kinds do you buy? Where do you buy yours? (cheapest place?), and how often or what times per day do you take what?

I'd appreciate your feedback! Thanks!

Early out my surgeon recommended chewable children's multi vitamins and chewable calcium and sublingual B-12.

I saw a chewable multi vitamin the other day from Bariatric Advantage that has no added iron or calcium so you can take separate on those things if you need it. It's recommended, actually.
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

P.S.  My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.

In the morning, I take 2 Trader Joe's chewable Vitamin C's and 3 chewable multi-vitaminin-minerals and a Vitamin B-12 sublingual and 2 big Biotins. I love TJ's stuff, cheap and tasty. In the afternoon, if I am not getting enough calcium, I chew a Viactiv, and at night I take an iron.

My labs have stayed good.

Good luck to your mom,
nancy

I keep switching things around a bit but currently I am taking;
Trader Joes chewable multi one twice a day
Bariatric advantage chewable iron 60mg two a day I thnk they have Vit C as well
Trafer Joes sub ling B-12
Bariatric advantage chewable calcium- chocolate just got these because I was tired of taking the citracal petites. They are o.k. Tried the lemon because others said they tasted like starbursts. I think they have been good and not had a real Starburst in a very long time. I have tried the powdered calcium and childrens chewable calcium and not like any. I have had a hard time finding a replacement for the ones that were discontinued, citracal chewy bites.
I want to add magnesium for reasons the Vitalady goes over in posts frequently, I just keep forgetting to pick some up.
My ferriatn goes up and down, the prescription iron raised it but made my gut feel raw so I just switched to the chewable from Baraiatric advantage.

My surgeon has recently changed his protocol for supplements and is encouraging the use of the Bariatric Advantage brand.  A company rep came to our support group to explain their research and products.  I am a bit of a cynic (and 'frugal'), so I wanted a real reason to change--and pay more.  Truth be told, he convinced me.  I have read about how supplements are not regulated, ingredients from China, etc. so I asked him about their manufacturing process.  And got the answers I needed.  But this isn't about a brand, but what one takes when, so here goes:

multivitamin: 2x a day, 1 in the morning, 1 after dinner
calcium citrate with D lozenge: 3x a day, 1 in morning, 1 in afternoon, 1 after dinner  (total 1200 mg)
Iron: at bedtime (at least 2 hours after last calcium) 29mg
B12: monthly shot (it's cheaper and easy for me since we have a nurse at work who gives it to me free)

I will be having my vitamin D levels checked next month to see if I need to add that supplement.

Note: if you drink coffee, you should wait at least 2 hours afterwards to take any supplement as coffee inhibits absorbtion.

Did you see the research about wls patients having more fractures--participants were 7 years out?  (Done by the Mayo Clinic I believe.)  It is very important to establish a good habit of supplementation.  And they are learning new things all the time--which might be why the doctor has something different now.

I'm 3+ years out, and have a much simpler regimen that the other posts. Post surgery I used a chewable multivitamin.  Once I could handle tablets, I changed to the real thing.
Each morning I take:
1 good quality Multivitamin/ Multimineral such as the Walmart version of Centrum (This will have iron in it)
1 High Potency B complex
1 Calcium with Vitamin D
I also take a C, E and Fish Oil (not required for bariatric needs, just a good idea for everyone in general.) Of course, I try to eat a healthy diet.  My bloodwork is always great.  To save money, I buy ahead when I see something I use on sale.
Good luck.
