OK, I will take a stab at this one, because I think I can relate to some of these things that you've got going on. The feelings you are struggling with sound completely normal for someone in your positiion.  Let's see you are about to undergo a huge operation with inherent risks, you are faced with the reality that you will be forced to transform your lifelong relationship with food, your trying to adhere to a whole new diet and exercise plan just to get to the operating room and on top of all of that, your pet has just passed, hmmmm.....yup, emotionally things are definatly going to be dicey...You know that though....and you're wondering how to or what to do about it...well here are some thoughts.... First of all, I'm glad that you are seeking out advice from the great bunch here on OH, while I am not a shrink nor do I play one on TV I will pretend....I think that one possibility is that like I did for a long time, you may confuse crankiness, sadness, or depression with anxiety. It took a Harvard educated psychologist to recognize it in my case, but once we were able to identify that, the course of treatment wasn't too difficult. Now in my case, I was working with a professional, the clinician from my WLS program as a matter of fact. I think a phone call to your's if available would be the best option...If that isn't available, maybe you could talk to your primary care doctor about it, he may be able to offer some resources.  If all else fails here are some tips. Try to identify exactly what is the cause or causes of your anxiety. Analyze it, drag it out into the light and expose it...Then think about the current way you are dealing with them, and ask yourself the Dr. Phil question: "How's that working out for ya?" The answer should be pretty clear. Now come up with some alternatives (on your own or maybe ask for input someplace like here). Choose a different path and committ yourself to following it. Verbalize it, write it down somewhere a diary, here, wherever you feel comfortable. It's kind of like a big boulder that is very hard to move, but once you push on it to break the inertia it WILL start to move, build mometum and get easier...it just takes a lot of energy to get it to budge. Hopefully, going through the exercise and building in some accountability to either yoursefl or others by posting your plan you will give yourself that surge you need to break the inertia...You are almost there, you have started down the path, but it is a path wrought with pitfalls and unexpected turns. This is just one of them. Six months from now you will certainly look back and say wow, that was pretty hard, but man was it worth it! You are going to feel so much better physically and about yourself, trust me....One day you will look at yourself and say: "damn, I'm sexy!" lol, seriously! If you need some specific advice on pre-op dieting I would call your surgeon first, or go on the south beach diet induction phase about a week before surgery - I can almost guarantee you you'll shed ten to fifteen pounds that week as long as you haven't been dieting hardcore right before it. If you need more help with the specifics of pre-op dieting and can't get it from your surgeon ask here, and we'll try to point you in the right direction.... Good luck, I hope this helps!
