ok so i am pre-op still , but i have never owned a scale, maybe one of the reason i got here in the first place. anywyas can you tell me your opinion on if i should buy a scale. the only time i weigh myself is at the dr's. i have ocd and i think if i owned one i would go crazy and weigh myself all the time, which isnt necessarly a bad thing. so have any of you not bought a scale. and if i should can you give me some pointers on which brand or options that i might want on a scale.such as bmi calculator. thanks in advanced!
I would suggest you wait on buying a scale... see how you do post-op without one then decide if you need it. My friend has scale OCD... the scale runs her life... if it goes up, shes miserable... if it goes down its not 'good enough'. She weighs multiple times a day... if shes somewhere with a scale, she weighs on that then obsesses about how it was different than her scale at home... its crazy.
Or if you chose to buy a scale now, have somebody strong around that can take it away from you if it gets to a point you cannot manage.
As for brands... I bought the cheapest one at WalMart 10 years ago - $9.99... to this day it is 100% accurate to my Drs office scales. I wouldnt trade it for the world. If it ever stops working I will cry!! haha

At first, it's not so bad because you should have fairly frequent doctor's office visits with your surgeon. But, I got to my 3 month appointment and then knew I wouldn't have another appointment until 6 months out and the thought of going 3 months without knowing my weight would have driven me crazy. I went to bed bath and beyond and stood on a bunch of scales and picked the one that gave the most consistent reading, and it was a nice bonus that I also thought it was pretty.
Yeh, honestly, I hate the scale. It's a demon. It changes based on what kind of flooring I'm weighing on, what I'm wearing, whether I've eaten, etc. And yes, honestly, I do get a little down when it doesn't move or goes up, even though there's always a perfectly good explanation for it, like what type of outfit I'm wearing, or the fact that I just ate a big meal (and of course, I know I can't expect to lose one pound everyday).
Eventually though, you're going to have to get a scale. That's just a normal part of maintaining your weight. So, whether you get one now, or in 6 months, or when you get to goal - you need to get one eventually.
I think it's a personal preference thing. We have a scale, and I didn't weigh myself all the time while I was losing weight, but I am religious about getting on the scale now that I'm trying to maintain my weight. If it jumps up or down, I need to know so I can correct it before my doctors pounce all over me.
If you do get one to track your weight loss, just remember that you'll be seeing stalls and fluctuations due to water weight, clothing, etc. I'd recommend weighing just once a week if you do get a scale.
I want to get a new one - one of those that measure water and fat content. I can't tell if it actually works though, or if it's just a gimmick. Does anyone know?
