So I have had this cough for like a week or so and one day I heard this popping noise in my stomach. I felt my belly and coughed. It felt like popcorn was popping in my stomach and this bulge came out. I freaked out and made my mom feel it. She said "you better call your surgeon". So I called and they said it may be a hernia. I scheduled an appointment for the next day. Went to the doc and sure enough he said "you have an incisional hernia" Seriously? Seriously. I mean it seems it has been 1 thing after another since I had my open RNY. So then the doc says that I need to have surgery to fix this hernia thing. He said 3 weeks off work. What? huh? I just started a new position at work and I am in training for the next 3 weeks that I cannot miss. So what do I do? It hurts mainly when I cough or strain too much, but I can deal with it. I am just going to wait until the training is done then have my surgery. He said that he would put this mesh stuff in my hernia. Mesh? Don't you use that for fishing or something? Doesn't Adidas make mesh pants? Am I going to have a jumpsuit in me? j/k you gotta have some sense of humor at a time like this. I don't think it's the hernia part thats getting to me. I think it is the actual surgery. The hospital, needles, scars, un flattering gowns, mean nurses who wake me up every hour. I just don't want to have to do this again. I apoligize for the rant but I wanted to let y'all know. If you have ever had a hernia, can you give me some advice?

Ruthie, Hernias suck, but if you can hold out....they also can mean free tummy tucks! I've waited 6 months to get mine fixed (also because I was with a new job). I found I had it in Sept...incisional also but directly under my sternum. And Will be getting it fixed along with a Tummy tuck on Feb 11th. I know the feeling of, oh no not again with the needles and hospital thing. BUT usually the good news is, your not normally on IV's from what I am told, no stupid NG tubes. Cause they havent done nothing to your internals so you can eat and drink as you were. And hernia stays usually only are one or two nights. And im guessing they are talking mesh because during your RNY surgery you doc might have found you to have a thin abdominal wall. Which isnt that uncommon in the overweight community. So he will reinforce it with mesh to enforce that it doesnt happen again.  As for your scar it shouldnt be too big, more than likely because it is incsional your surgeon will go through your original scar. And here is a hint to reduce or eliminate scarring, use raw honey on the inscision once staples are removed (if your surgeon uses them) if not use it once you get home. This is no joke. Hope this helps a bit or if ya got more questions feel free to ask.

That really stinks, I'm sorry you're going to have to go back under the knife.  How much longer is the training period for your job?  From what I know about hernias, they aren't normally life threatening unless they are internal, so I would imagine it won't be a huge deal to put it off.  Have you talked to your surgeon yet about when he/she wants to schedule the hernia repair?  I absolutely understand that surgeries aren't fun, but hopefully you'll be 100% after this one to fix the hernia.
