Alcohol consumption

Hello everyone,
I am planning on having surgery next month. My best friend is getting married in June and i am her matron of honor. I very rarely drink alcohol now but I planned on having some ****tails at her bachelorette party in may and at her wedding. Does anyone know if i will be able to have a couple of drinks 1 month after surgery? my surgery is 1 month and 1 week before her bach. party and 2 months before her wedding. I dont want to sound like alcohol is the most important thing but bachelorette parties are usually crazy!
thanks, Kristen

although i am pre op still and cant answer your question throughly, if cant have the alcohol, you can always get it virgin, that way you'll still be enjoying the fun time with sipping and talking. hope you get more answers though.

It all depends on what your doctors say.  One month out probably not.  but i just saw my NUT and im about 2 months out and she said i could start to have some, but to take it slow and not drink alot at a time.  But some doctors say not for three months, so it just all depends on what your doctors say to do.  Don't worry you dont sound like an alcoholic or anything, alcohol is a big part of lives, I just turned 21 in Oct and am not a big drinker either, but my friends want to go out and get drinks but i couldn't drink since my surgery so ive been just hanging around.

First, what type of surgery are you having? I only know RNY so that's where my response is coming from.  I'm not going to say to do it or not.  That's honestly between you and your doc or NUT.  However, if you DO choose to drink, know the following: Having alcohol in the first 6 months after surgery is harder on your liver It will affect you WAY faster than you'll expect so it's best to do a test run at home and make sure it doesn't make you sick.  You REALLY don't want to get sick at the bachelorette party!  =) Having said that, it is highly adviseable to only drink around those you feel completely comfortable with and who will have your back if you end up "drunker" than you expected. Don't Drive!!!  (But you already knew that!) You're going to want to stay away from things like margaritas and daquiris.  Way too much sugar.  I've read lots of people have had "success" if you will, with vodka and cranberry juice.  If you're a beer drinker, this is strongly advised against because of the carbonation and how filling it is. Sip your drink Having said that, my NUT did say that a drink every now and again would be fine just be ready for the after-effects.  I don't think you're an alkie for asking lol, we're young and it's just a part of our lives.  But definitely test drive it at home!  One drink will go a loooong way. And if you're not having RNY, feel free to disregard this lol

i completely agree with the Jennifer's post! Although i found that OJ/Sprite/Bicardi Limon is PHENOMINAL! haha i would DEF stay away from all the fruity drinks....they more then likely will upset ur stomach.  I was told to wait 6months... which i did. im sure if u just pretend to be sipping on ur drink no one will say anything {im asuming these people dont know ur having the surgery?!} and if they do know....then im sure they will understand why u cant have the drink....ur prolly better of safe then sorry.  hey bright side..u can be DD :)

This is alos coming from an RNY standpoint.  At my one month checkup, I asked my NUT about drinking and she told me that they usually advise to wait about a year.  Although, she DID tell me that one or two wouldn't hurt every now and then. (I was asking for a wedding that I was in myself on 2/16/08).  Well.....I did find that I can NOT drink beer, 1. the carbonation and 2. it just tastes awful now.  SO I did switch to liquor and let me tell ya....it took only two drinks (and I was 2 months out) and I was lit to the wind and was hungover the next TWO days.  I have never felt like that before.  So just as a warning, I STRONGLY advise that you doa test run at home.  I do not plan on drinking anything else for a LONG LONG time.

Jennifer S brought up a lot of good points already... I will say this - if you rarely drink anyways, why not just keep it that way? You are having some sort of major surgery to get healthy and better yourself - why drink so early out? your body is going thru so much anyways, dont 'punish' it further. Plus, being the sober one you can tell everybody the next day all the stupid stuff they did when drunk ;-)
