How long did it take to get your energy back after surgery?

I had my RNY on the 10th and am home recuperating at the moment.  I had a rough couple of days with pain in the hospital after they took me off the morphine.  But I don't think the two elderly women causing a ruckus all day and night on my floor helped any.  One of them was my roommate and she kept waking me up every hour saying her call button wasn't working.  The other woman was a few doors down and kept yelling every few minutes at the top of her lungs.  The nurses told me she had dimensia and didn't speak English, so they were having a tough time taking care of her.  While I felt sorry for both women, I got really tired of it. But, I'm happy to report, the pain just completely disappeared on Monday and now I'm just extremely tired.  I get up every couple of hours and walk a few laps around the house.  By the time I sit back down my heart is pounding.  I've never had surgery before, so I wasn't prepared for this problem.  How long did it take to get your energy back?  I had hoped to return to work on Monday the 24th, but don't think that will happen with the way I'm feeling right now.

Congrats on your surgery!  For me it took about a month to feel back to normal.  The first couple weeks were tough.  At 3 weeks I felt good enough to go back to work but I was still pretty wiped by the end of the day.  1-2 weeks after that I felt like I got my energy back.  Just take it easy, take it slow and rest when you feel like you need it.

I felt like I ran a marathon after just a trip to the grocery store so I called the nurse practitioner from my clinic and she told me the effects of the anasteshia could actually last up to a month in our bodies, that coupled with the very low calorie intake explains it....For me, I noticed a big difference somewhere around 3 or 3.5 weeks, but everyone's different....

I didn't have RNY, but I know that just having a VSG ( a little less recovery time than RNY) about a month ago, and I'm still in the "I feel I need a nap everyday stage" when I get home from work. I love naps, but really want to do more with my time now.  I tried pushing it alot around a week out, but was told by my doc and everyone around me to give it time since when I rest and sleep is when I would heal the most.  Soooo.... I hope you get the energy back soon!

I think I started feeling more like myself around 5 weeks out or so, but I can't even really remember. I do remember that the first 2-3 weeks were completely exhausting. I planned going back to school full time after 14 days...but I was way too tired.  I ended up going back, but just focusing on certain things that HAD to be done, so I guess I went back more like part-time.  If you're able to resume work part-time, I think that would be a good option, at least for a couple of days, if not the whole week.  I would count on being kinda sleepy the first week or two bac****il you get into the swing of things.

I struggled with low energy for most of my first year post-op. I was very tired immediately post-op but expected it because thats what anesthsia does to me. I struggled a lot the first month, it slowly got better. Around 2 months I felt pretty good, but then the low energy came back at 3 months, got better and worse over and over the first year... I am happy to report that my energy levels are excellent now - I have more energy then I ever have. As for work... I toughed it out - I had surgery on Tuesday and was back to work Monday. I didnt have a choice, no vacation, no STD and all my $$ went towards the surgery so I did what I had to do!

I'm almost 2 mos out and some days, I still feel pooped (like today).   But I'd say my energy started to increase after about 6 weeks.  One thing is true - I definitely feel better now than pre-op, no matter how tired I am!   Heather

I don't hardly recognize myself or my life anymore!

Thanks for the responses.  I guess I just need to take it slow and not push myself too hard.  I spoke with my manager about trying to work just 20 hours next week and she agreed that it was a good plan.  She even offered to drive me home if I get too tired.  I have a good manager :)

I had my surgery on on a Tuesday and I went back to work on Monday working 50 + hours a week.....I was VERY exhausted and would come home and go to bed, but I had to do it.  Now 3 months out....I still get tired easily, and now I am working 2 jobs.  however as long as I keep my protein up, I feel good.  Proten and water is KEY!!!   Each day gets better.....
