No protein Shakes after surgery?

So, my aunt had surgery last week and they told her that she could no longer have Protein Shakes because it would ruin her kidneys.  I thought this was the strangest thing ever. So, is there any truth to this? With my surgery almost a year behind me I find it odd to hear something like this. Has anyone else's surgeon told them not to drink protein shakes? I know that sometimes right after surgery the shakes make people sick.. but not because it's hurting their kidneys. (sigh)

I don't know about kidneys but I was not allowed to have any protien supplments after surgery because I was told that with the stress of surgery, and rapid weight losss that the excess protien could damage my liver. I am four months out now and was just allowed to begin protien shakes.

If that's the case, my kidneys are shot!  I probably have had a shake a day for over two years.  I am with you, haven't heard about it hurt our dear filters :) How you been, love?

Sounds skechy to me... I was being fed protein drinks (optifast) in the hospital on my 2nd day out of RNY and was told its a great supplement anytime after if I'm not meeting my protein minimums.  I guess each doctor has their own opinions but from reading other posts on this site, it's definately sounds skechy that she can't have protein shakes.

Some surgeons are against protein shakes. If you do the research liquid protein is hard on the kidneys to process - there really isnt much information out there stating it would 'ruin' your kidneys but many experts agree that suppliments arnt really good in long term use. Typically those with pre-existing kidney issues or kidney disease are advised to follow low(er) protein diets. It depends on what research you want to follow and who you want to listen to.  Personally my surgeon likes his patients off suppliments and getting protein from food only at the 6 month mark. My feeling is it is always better to get what you need from food than from a suppliment. I believe as time passes its extremely easy to get in ones required protein thru proper planning. I had to go back to protein shakes this past novemeber due to gall bladder issues and my hair started to fall out again. Once I moved back to normal eating it stopped. *shrug* thought it was pretty interesting.
