Did any of you do it alone?

Since there arent any surgeons in New Mexico that do the surgery im going to El Paso, tx for it which is 4 hours away. Most likely I will be going by myself only because my husband has to watch my son and it will be too hard and too expensive for my husband to go there and get a hotel and everything so he will be staying here and watching my son. My mom just had her surgery yesterday and my dad went with her to help out and everything. My dad is going to be having the surgery but he might not have it done for 3-4 months, we arent sure yet. SO I was wondering if any of you did it alone and how was it? Im scared because it seems like it is going to be too much and too hard on me. There really isnt anyone who can stay with my son other than my hubby and my parents wont be able to take the time off of work.... what should I do?!?

How will you get home? Driving will be off limits for at least a few days to a week. I don't know doing it alone I guess is possible, but not advisable.

If I do it alone, I will fly down, and coming home my husband can leave my son with my parents for the day and he can drive down a get me... I do have family there and im sure they will check up on me, I just wont have anyone that will stay with me.. Im sure I will be fine and be able to do it because at this point ive waited 4 years and nothing is getting in my way! lol...

I really appreciated having my mom close by in a hotel and it was comforting to have her walk the halls with me.  It meant a LOT to have her support through the whole ordeal.  But overall, I slept any minute I could and hardly remember she was there.  Once I got home, her presence and her care were vital to my post-op recovery and I am so thankful she walked through that journey with me. When you wake up post-op you will want/need somebody there that you love... Godforbid if there is a complication/issue how will that play out with your loved ones four hours away? Its not a big possibility but something you have to think about post-op. My father came up for my surgery... while I was in the hospital he walked the halls with me and it was nice to have him to lean on.... I started dry heaving at one point and he rushed to get my lil barf pan (lol).... my shoulders hurt so bad from the laproscopic gas he rubbed them for me... when the phone was ringing off the hook he gave all the updates when I was too tired. I honestly cant imagine waking up after surgery and being alone.

Aww thats a nice dad! Your right about the whole thing.. it really will be hard to be alone I think but in my case.. I really dont know what to do. Since it is out of state the doctors are going to have me there for 4-5 days! I cant imagine my husband and my toddler son being there with me. I might be able to see if I can have one of my aunts or cousins can watch my son during the day and my parents at night for those days... AHH im so confused and stressed. But thanks for replying!

You know what, I remember being in your shoes - so close you can taste it. And I remember how determined I was to make this thing happen. Would it be better to have family there with you? Of course. But, at this point, I don't think you are going to let anything get in your way - and I COMPLETELY understand. I know that a lot of the time I spent in the hospital was alone because it was three hours from where we lived and with kids and work schedules and everything I didn't really spend that much time with family visitors, but you know what? I was tired and with the nurses coming in so often to check vitals, I wanted as much un-interupted sleep as I could get anyway. There was always the phone and the TV when I was bored...maye even the internet if I had planned things better...Anyways, in my opinion, if you can, by all means figure out a way to have family there, but if not - you WILL make it through without them just fine...

I couldn't imagine doing it alone, when I had my surgery I had a small army with me, my husband, my dad, my mom came up from texas, my mother and my father in law were all there.  I know not everyone can have 5 people there but you really should try to find a way to get your husband there, talk to the doctor that you are having surgery with, I know near us they had specials for the family of patients at hospitals, so they could stay at a reasonably priced hotel.  One of the places next to us was over 1/2 off!!  That might help with the costs, are you having lap band or bypass, because that will make a difference in how long you are staying at the hospital.  The trip home was really hard and having someone there was important for me, cuz every bump HURT LIKE HECK! Good luck to you I hope you keep us updated!
