Surgery Date:April 23, 2007
I am almost 3 months out, and within 3 weeks everyone kept telling me that my face was so different and everyone noticed but me. I really didnt feel it until just about 3 weeks ago. I wasnt comfortable with myself for about a good year before surgery and I never wanted to leave the house, my face broke out, I dressed in sweats and now I feel soo much prettier. Like I used to be before I became a frompy stay at home mom. Im wearing clothes I havent worn in atleast 3 years and I really feel so much better and im finally getting my self confidence back. But im finally starting to notice and see the change. It took over a month for me to really see the changes in myself. So goodluck and I hope everything works out.
Mommyambie, that is exactly how I have felt this past year. I have been very social in the past and this year I have not wanted to leave my house, wearing ugly crazy clothes I normally wouldnt have worn before. I am excited to have a chance to be alive again. I am so happy for you!! You sound like you are doing great!!

The honeymoon period is the first 6 months, the 'typical' weight loss window is approx 18 months... after 6 months most (not all) notice a slow down... my surgeon said 10-15lbs the first 6, 5 after (he does proximal RNY).... at approx 18 months is when your body 'adjusts' to the surgery and you will find it harder to lose - however you CAN keep losing... my friend is 6 years out and is still losing weight - it takes longer and she has to work but she does it (shes a little crazy, size 6 still trying to lose weight).
I started at a little over 280, I got down to 252 before surgery... it wasnt until I hit 220 did people who didnt know I had surgery say something to me I would say it was around 4 months out or so? Approaching somebody about their weight is not always easy - even when they see you losing it... never know the reason why etc.. so dont worry if people say something or not, listen to those close to you who will be honest!

I lost fifteen pounds in the first week. I am a month out and down approximately thirty pounds (217 to 187). However, only three people have noticed. Perhaps it's due to my penchant for baggy clothes, however I hope that eventually (Thanksgiving) there will be a few more comments.
I have heard that the Honeymoon Stage lasts six months and therefore, I am really attempting to rock it so I don't have as much work to do afterwards.

Hi Carmen,
I've lost 27lbs since the surgery less than 3weeks ago. My starting weight was 303lbs and 295lbs on my surgery date. Its hard for people who see you all the time to notice the weight loss. But, I catch a lot of people looking at me and kinda squinting like "hmmm" as much as I wish 27lbs was noticable to the world it isnt at my size. I can tell a difference already in areas like my breast and stomach but not enough for someone to say "OMG you lost weight!" I'm trying not to look for that outside gratification and just stay positive!

My mom noticed my weight loss within the first three weeks, most others didn't start commenting until I dropped 50 lbs. I'm now 9.5 mos out and have lost 115 lbs total. But the truth of the "honeymoon phase" is real. Weight loss slows dramatically the farther out from surgery you are and the closer you approach your goal weight. That's why sticking to the rules and exercising regularly are key. I averaged 12-15 lbs a month at first.... now 30 lbs from goal, the scale is inching down at 2-5 lbs per month. When you weigh less, your body burns less calories even while resting, and you need fewer calories to maintain your weight. And it gets easier to eat more the farther out you are. So stick with the rules and exercise and you'll do great!
