Extreme Encounters, Terrific Transformations

March 2007

In November 2002, Dr. Andre Aboolian?s practice and his surgical facility were used for the very first Extreme Makeover television filming. Since then, ?extreme makeovers? have captured the attention of the world.

Aboolian?s office is located in the international plastic surgery capital--ten miles east of the Pacific Ocean, where luxury and beauty intersect. These days his practice is less about the makeover television series and more about helping patients achieve specific personal alterations. Dr. Aboolian became one of the first surgeons to be trained in the complicated art of performing ?body lifts? and, as a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon with a keen eye for body contouring and symmetry, he achieves results that are recognized and appreciated by both patients and peers.

Patients who have successfully lost enormous amounts of weight often find themselves with a new and debilitating problem. Vast areas of loose skin remain a barrier to a truly healthy lifestyle. With a focus on meticulous and precise surgery, Dr. Aboolian creates astounding transformations. His patients? ?before and after? pictures are proof. But he doesn?t work alone; pre-surgical planning is an awesome task and requires a skilled team of professionals who work closely together.

This is not a surgery for the faint of heart or for those who cannot make the commitment to exacting and rigorous follow-up. For those who choose it and commit to the whole process, this procedure can be one of the most rewarding experiences of their lives. However, altering ones physical appearance doesn?t effect a complete transformation; social, spiritual, emotional, nutritional and cognitive processes are integral to deep change. As the participants in the television show soon came to realize, the process can be overwhelming.

The visual results of the makeovers make excellent film copy and inspire awe, but the professionals involved have learned to evaluate this transformation with optimism and special care. The results are beautiful, but it takes time for the patients to mentally and emotionally grow into and embrace their new personas.
