21 June 2003 It's the first day of Summer today and we had a beautiful day. It was a great day for me because it was my 1st appt step. Al and I attended a group support meeting at EMMC/Bangor, ME. I didn't expect many attendees, but there were about 30 men and women. We had a wonderful group leader named Rosie. She removed a lot of my concern about my age and having gastic bypass. She is 7 yrs post-op and had her surgery when she was 61. She did fine and can be quite a comic. She is a psychologist by profession, but volunteers at support group meetings as a "loser". We learned a lot from Rosie, but also had the opportunity to hear from 3 others. They were at different stages of post-op... one was 8 months and doing great .. another at 6 months and was having a struggle, and another who had her surgery 9 days ago. Each had different experiences to share with us. At first I was trying to figure out HOW we were going to fill 2 hours, and before we knew it, the time was up. There were a few who were at different stages of pre-op. It was also nice to hear that just maybe the wait may not be more then 4-5 months. Now I'm looking forward to the Pre-op Education Mtg on Monday. Also stopped to meet and visit with Jennifer Stanley of Surry. She had her surgery yesterday (Fri, 20 June 2003) and was sitting up and doing fine, although she said she was tired today. Her "angel" Heather was there with her and met her husband just as we were leaving. She seems to have a great support system. From what I learned today, I need to get busy doing some form of physical moving and start on vitamins. Otherwise I feel I'm in fairly decent health, and I'm grateful for that. Dr Clough is evidently operating 5 days/week and doiing 5-7 procedures. I just hope he doesn't get too worn down before the line gets to me. It appears that he has a fantastic support system around him. By having all of the pre-op procedures done by Lynn and the rest of the team, things seem to run very smoothly. At the meeting there were approximately 7 of us that were there as possible pre-ops. All of us had the same type of questions to ask and get answers for..ie, vitamins, personal attitudes about our weight, statistics of death, finding out that each individual is affected differently throughout the pre-op and post-op journey. By talking we found that we had much the same concerns and questions. Even AL who is a nurse, said he even learned somethings he wasn't aware of. I look forward to more meetings..it seems that they will be very helpful. It was a great experience enjoyed with some wonderful people.
