Patrick Coates

"I first heard about Dr. Coats from a peer who was working closely with him to develop the Bariatric Program at DHM (Doctors Hospital Manteca). My first impression was "he's serious about the surgery". I thought about having the surgery for over a year. During that time I researched the risks and benefits. When I made my up my mind to have the surgery I made an appointment with Dr. Coats. My appointment date was changed 2 times due to scheduling conflicts. I did see him approx. 3 weeks from the time of my initial contact with his office. The staff is polite and takes the time to answer questions that I am sure they answer all day every day. You would never be able to tell by the tone of their voices. On the day of my appt. I was so excited that I hardly slept a wink the night before. My husband accompanied me, thank goodness for his support. The office is very comfortable and inviting. I did not have to wait any longer than I have waited in the past to see a physician. When I was taken to the exam room the assistant weighed me(I hated that part), took a before picture and vital signs. She was very pleasant. When Dr. Coats entered the room he addressed my husband and I with a concerning tone. Because I had done my homework and studied up about the surgery I felt like I had a handle on what to expect. I was suprised to find out that there was a 5% chance of death. The description of what the surgery entailed was fantastic. He brought it down to a level that was very understandable. The picture he drew of the stomach & intestines were a great visual aid. As for the aftercare program we discussd the importance of dietary suppliments in the form of vitamins and excercise. I did not feel rushed in the least. His manner is relaxed which provided a secure enviroment in which to ask questions. Since my appointment on Sept. 12, 2003 I have not heard anything from my insurace company (Pacific Care). The psy. eval took 3 weeks to be dictated and sent to Dr. Coats office, which delayed my request for the surgery to be sent to Pacific Care. Dr. Coats office promised to send in the request for my surgery on Monday Oct. 6, 2003. Now I wait. Please wish me luck. "
