I posted my surgery story on my general info page but wanted to post it as an update here as well:
My surgery was last Friday - Aug 2, 2002. I went in at 8 am and was in the pre-op area within minutes even though I arrived 30 minutes early to have the extra time with my hubby - oh well!
My surgery lasted about 3 1/2 to 4 hours I think, but I am not sure. Dr. Byrne did my Lap Rny with no problems, he also took out my gall bladder and repaired a hernia all at once so I got a triple dose all at once! I am glad that I do not have to have 3 different surgeries, but the recovery is a little slower.
My hospital stay was good overall and my first 2 1/2 days were a morphine haze, but I do remember who came to visit, etc I just was in no state to talk to anyone - I mostly slept.
The night of my surgery I felt nauseated because of anesthesia but I still pestered the nurse to let me walk - I only walked to the wall and back but darn it, I walked! Then I felt really faint and a bit green so went back to bed til the morning.
First day after surgery I had my cather taken out mid to late morning so each time I had to pee I made myself get out of the room and walk the hall, with each trip being just a bit longer than the last, whether I felt like it or not! other than getting up for the bathroom & my walks I mostly slept & was awakened by nurses & technicians to constantly(every hour) have my bp checked or my temp or my blood sugar - which they checked every 2 hrs. Saturday evening my iv blew my vein & they had to stick me again - which I am TERRIFIED of needles! They put it at my elbow against my request & sure enough it blew again on Sunday afternoon.
Sunday morning I went for my leak test - that stuff tasted like chalky liquid poop! Not to mention it gives you MAJOR diarrhea a little while later! The technicians doing the test were really rough & not interested in the fact that I was a human who had just gone thru major surgery, but I had no leaks so I was happy enough. Just after my leak test I was brought my first "meal" of broth - YUMMMMMM!!!!! It tasted so good! Later that evening I would receive a tray with various tiny cups of juices. All was going down in the tiniest bits but going down well just the same, so then my IV vein blows again......
They proceed to make a friggin pin cushion out of my arms & I was at the point of tears. I had them call my doc to ask if I could go on liquid meds & come off of IV since my liquids were going down well. They called him & he said yes! YIPPEE!!! Now all that was left hanging out of my body was the drain tube.
Monday morning they told me I could go home - this was 6:45 am & I didn't get out of there til 2 pm - I had a waste of a nurse that day - she never even told me her name & she didn't know her head from a hole in the ground! But I got out of there eventually! The bad thing - the drain tube had to go with me - YUCK!!!!!!!
So, I have been at home since Monday & still sleeping in the reclyner til this tube comes out tomorrow morning when I see Dr Byrne - I hope his scale agrees with mine & that it says I really have lost 18 pounds - we shall see - pray for me please!
I am terrified about getting this tube out but I will be glad to see this NASTY thing go! IT is truly disgusting and a PIA! I think my morale will be better when it its gone.
I still have some minimal pain and discomfort and I am certainly very tired & I worry about getting in the right amounts of "food" - still on liquids - I have several questions that I will ask tomorrow at my appointment, but I am otherwise doing very well!
I hope my story helps someone - it was an overall good surgery experience - just a little more than I expected in the pain department & I thought I would reccoup a little faster, but then again I wasn't expecting to have all THREE things done at once.
Hugs to everyone & thanks for the support & prayers I have gotten & hope to continue getting! Now, just bring on the weight loss!
HUGS
