John P. Grant

"Because I was seeking treatment about 8 hours from home - Dr. Grant called me after reviewing my initial intake form before my first visit was scheduled. During this conversation and my initial visit, I found him to be caring, direct, down to earth and genuinely concerned. The rest of his team was also wonderful. Within 60 days, I had a surgery date which was December 7 at my election. He was equally wonderful at my pre-op visit and the day of surgery. He was very clear as to risks of surgery and chances of successfully doing the procedure by endoscopy. On 12/7, he successfully did both the Roux en Y and removed my gallbladder by 'scope. Although Duke is a teaching hospital and I saw surgical residents early each morning, I also saw him personally each afternoon. My pain was well controlled and I was walking the halls the day after surgery. Before I left the hospital (Discharged Monday 12/10) I saw the dietician who works with him and the medical doctor who also follows his patients (Dr. Knowles - MD with Nutrition training) While Dr. Grant's does not have his own post-op support group, ( I live too far away to participate in it even if he had one) I've found his after care thus far to be wonderful. I've found a support group locally where I live. If you are not ready for directness, Dr. Grant is probably not for you, but I think he's just what I needed. My experience with him is that he doesn't mince his words with respect to the risks, your responsibilities post-op, etc. I liked his directness as this was a very serious decision for me."
