I started researching wls in June 2002. I consulted with a surgeon in Ft Lauderdale who only did open RNY. I wasnt totally into the time and pain, and I half-heartedly filled out the profile for my insurance and was promptly denied. Nothing changed with regards to my weight. In February of 2003 I got new insurance and went to see my PCP - he was surprised and disappointed I see that I hadnt had the surgery. We did blood work, my diabetes was out of control, the triglycerides and cholesterol were as high as ever, and he implored me to pursue surgery again. I did with Dr. Sosa. I did a really thorough 4 page letter where i documented in detail all my co-morbities and family history. I was nervous because my BMI was only 36.4 which is the low end of the NIH guidelines. But I guess my other stuff was bad enough because I was approved on my first letter. I am scheduled for surgery on May 21, 2003. Pre-Op tests on Monday and I meet with the nutritionist tomorrow for my program. Two weeks exactly and I cant wait. My mom and sister are flying in from Connecticut for support for a week or so which should be nice. If all goes well I am hoping to be back to work the following week.
