2 weeks post-op

Sep 26, 2007

Well, I did it!  After more than a year of prep and waiting, I finally had my surgery. I'm now two weeks post-op. The first few days were very hard, but it's been getting better and easier every day since I got home from the hospital.

I did 1 week of liquids, had my post-op follow-up, and am now eating pureed foods -- along with my protein drinks, of course. I am not quite drinking enough water, I think, but I'm working on improving that.  I am tired. I'm back to work, and I'm fortunate that I'm able to split my days between the office an home, taking a nap mid-day if I need it. Not every day, but most. I'm happy and relieved that my brain is working fine!  I think for a living, so I was a bit worried about the effects of the calorie reduction. And for the first week, I really didn't have enough energy to think. But my body seems to have adapted; my brain came back online after about a week. Phew!

As predicted, I'm not hungry. I have some cravings for particular foods, but I find that they are not as strong as they used to be. I can be around other people eating like I used to, and it's not much of a problem. And even the kitchen full of junk food snacks at work doesn't tempt me. So far. ;-)  I'm still figuring out which foods I like and don't. Pureed steamed broccoli with a little SmartBalance spread is actually quite good!

I never did get around to taking a pre-op photo. But after losing a little on my doctor-supervised plan, I had bounced back up to almost 230 lbs fully clothed on my doctor's scale, 226 or so as I weigh myself at home. It's been dropping at a steady pace, and this morning, the scale said 211.4.
So it's coming off. I haven't dropped any sizes yet; I think I'm still a bit stretched out or swollen from the surgery. But the weight is dropping, and it all feels like very good progress so far.

Special thanks to those who sent me pre-op encouragements! That was really nice, and helped fight the pre-op panic. Thanks!

I decided to have surgery last summer ('06), after attending a seminar with my husband. We had different health insurance plans a the time, though, and while his approved quickly, mine required 6 months of doctor-supervised diet. My husband had surgery in September (yeah for him!). I finished my 6 months in March, but I haven't felt ready to make the jump. It's funny, I felt ready back in Aug-Sept, now I don't!  Current work chaos doesn't help with the overwhelmed feeling, but I think I just need to put that all aside and do it. I'm gathering up my courage tonight for an appointment with my primary care doc tomorrow. We're supposed to talk about it again anyway, so I'm trying get my head in the right place so I tell him I'm ready to have him send the diet records to the insurance and the surgeon, and that I'm going to make an appointment with the surgeon and get things moving again.  It seems like all my determination and focus leaked out during that six months. I need it back! So I'm back on here, and reading everyone's stories to get my head around it again. Thanks for sharing, everyone. :-)
