Had the Week From Hell

Feb 27, 2010

10 days ago severe abdominal pain came on from nowhere. I called the surgeon's office and headed to the ER. CT scan showed I had gallstones and something else on the scan "didn't look right," but they couldn't tell what it was.  Two days later I was in the hospital for a routine gallbladder removal that was supposed to be a 40 minute procedure.  Over two and a half hours later the surgeon finally spoke with my family.  My gallbladder pretty much fell apart when they touched it and I had a massive internal hernia at the connection of the Y-limb from the RNY.  Dr Pham said 3/4 of my bowel was chronically herniated. No wonder I've felt like shit for months!!!! My abdominal was also full of fluid when they got inside. Needless to say i wasn't going home that day. Not really sure what day everything happened on, but at one point I was passing out because my blood pressure was 80/30 from losing so much blood. I ended up in the ICU for constant monitoring after the nurses on the floor had called 5 rapid response codes on me in 2 days, enough is enough. I needed 4 blood transfusions and what felt like a million meds. 9 days later, here I am, finally home! I feel like I got hit my a truck, I have massive amounts of blood and fluid in my abdomen and a bruise the size of a melon on my abdomen from the collection of blood.  I can;t sleep because I am so uncomfortable but am in so much pain that all I want to do is sleep. Sigh.....

It's been one heck of a year....

Feb 17, 2010

Well happy surgiversary to me. Yesterday made it official. What a ride it has been this last year. Life has definately had its ups and downs.  As far as surgery and weightloss everything is great.  I am down 113 lbs since last year at this time. I reached my surgeon's goal back in October and am 8 lbs from my own personal goal.  I haven't really lost any weight these last few months, but honestly, I haven't been working out much either.  I would love to lose another 20 lbs, but I will take what I can get.  I am looking into plastics now, fingers crossed for insurance approval.  I have a consult in 3 weeks and another at the end of April.

My vitamin levels are decent now, I was getting weekly IV iron infusions for a while and I still give myself B12 injections which aren't so bad. I recently added a Vitamin D supplement as well. I don't understand why I am so tired all the time, I feel like I could fall asleep standing up most days.

Surgery has definately changed me, some things for the better, some things for the worst. My marriage is just about in ruins. I don't blame the surgery, but I'm sure it doesn't help. My husband also had RNY in September.  We've both experienced a lot of changes this past year and I'm not so sure that either of us know how to deal with them

So today I hit a huge milestone. Yesterday I hit wonderland, as of today I am down 100# and to my surgeon's goal. I promised myself once I hit that goal that I wasn't going to weigh myself anymore. I am going to try my hardest to leave that for Dr's appts and every so often when they do my measurements at the gym. I'm feeling pretty good lately.  I am still tired but ferritin and B12 are low, we're still working on that. I treated myself to a new pair of jeans yesterday, they were a size 34 I was sooooo excited! I really need to stay out of the Tony Walker store lol.

6 months

Aug 17, 2009

Sunday I was 6 months out of my RNY. I am down 85 lbs and am so close to a normal BMI I can taste it! I haven't been feeling great lately. I called Dr Caruana'a office and they mailed me a script for bloodwork and I have an appt with Audrey next week Tuesday. My primary Dr called me with my CBC results the day after I had the bloodwork done and informed me that I was an anemic....here come the iron pills. Most of the vitamin levels weren't back yet, I should get the rest of my reults back at my appt next week. I am able to eat a fairly normal diet, I really don't feel like I am missing out on anything. I am usually right around 80 grams of protein a day and 1000-1100 calories. I see the nut again next month, hopefully she can give me some guidance.

4 Months Out

Jun 16, 2009

Well today I am 4 months out, just happened to have an appt at Synergy today too. to date I have lost 68 lbs and my BMI has dropped by exactly 10 points, 3 more and I am no longer "obese!!!" I can honestly say that this is the best decision I have ever made. Audry said I was way ahead of schedule with my weight loss and should be to their goal for me in no time. I am only 31# away from my Dr's goal in 4 short months. Time sure does fly. My labs are perfect and I couldn't be happier. Hope everyone else is doing well!

Weight

May 05, 2009

I'm becoming so frustrated with this whole weight loss thing. I am no longer weighing everyday, every other day or every three dys now. Hey I have to start somewhere! I feel like I'm not even losing a pound a week anymore! I saw my endocrinologist yesterday, my thyroid is way overactive still. Most of you will think awesome! You'll lose wight quicker......NOT! What is happening is that my body is in permenant starvation mode because my metabolism is in overdrive and requiring triple, if not quadruple the amount of calories I am taking in. The dr uped my meds, but unfortunately it can take months to get my levels normalized. I feel like I did this all for nothing, I don't regret it, I'm just super frustrated!

Spinning

Apr 28, 2009

So I did my first post-op spinning class, boy am I out of shape! lol. Can only imagine how bad it would have been 48 lbs ago lol. I was able to make it through the first half hour, then my butt got super sore and I was on and off for the second half of the class. I'm getting kinda frustrated. I think I'm in another stupid stall. I am going to try to go up on my protein and calories and go from there. I haven't lost anything in almost a week. I wanted to lose another 10# before I go to Mexico on the 13th, that is def. not going to happen :( Sorry, just venting....I'm done now

2 Months Out

Apr 21, 2009

So I'm a little behind, but what else is new lol. I was 2 months out last Thursday and am honestly feeling pretty good. As of today I am down 47 lbs and 20 inches. I went from a tight 24 to a size 20 jeans. From a 3X scrub pant to an XL. I still have my bad days where no matter what I eat I'm feeling nauseated and get sick. This surgery is the best thing I have ever done though. I think I am going to go to the Synergy support group next week, just to see what goes on there. Hope everyone is doing well!

4 Weeks Out Today

Mar 16, 2009

Well 4 weeks ago I was getting prepped for surgery. I am down 29# and according to my husband's measurements I am down 8" from my body. I somehow thought I had lost more inches than that, but I'll take what I can get. I'm still having a hard time with the whole eating thing. I know I'm only getting about half of the carbs that my surgeon recomends and I'm not eating anything with fiber in. Trust me, I have suffered because of that lol. It's so hard to eat. Of course I am eating my protein first and when it's time for fruits or veggies I just can't do it. I'm stuffed. In less than two weeks my surgeon wants me at 800-1000 cal. I've worked myself up to maybe 650-700. To do that I feel like I'm constantly eating all day long. I want to be able to start exercising more, but I know I'm not getting enough fats or carbs in to give me the energy I need to allow me to workout longer. I need to find a nutritionist ASAP!  Enough rambling though. I feel good, my husband says I look good, although I see no difference at all. Also, I am so lucky that I have not dumped yet! Thank god!

I no longer qualify for surgery!

Mar 13, 2009

As of this morning I am 26# down since my surgery 3.5 weeks ago! That makes my BMI 39.8, which means I no longer qualify for my RNY!!! I didn't have any comorbidities such as high blood pressure or diabetes, so my BMI had to be >40 to qualify for surgery. I know this is nothing major, but I was very excited. Obviously, little things amuse me!
