I'm back

Mar 04, 2009

I've been so busy looking for a job that I didn't have time to write, but I found a job in Eagan and things are now falling into place again. I had my surgery on 11/5/2008 with 365 pounds. Now I'm down to 293.
I FEEL FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is a pleasure to be able to move and walk like I used to. One of the things I hated about being that big was not being able to move with ease.
I  feel like I've won the battle already but I know that I have a long way to go, so I will keep my guard up for those carb cravings.

January 17, 2009 Santo Domingo, Dom. Rep

Jan 17, 2009

Here I am. Getting ready to head back to MN. My last visit with Dr. Betances was on Tuesday 13 and my weight was 317 pounds. All is great and he gave me my medical records, so I´m ready to get my life back together again.

I found a support group in Burnsville. Apparently they are good people and willing to take you in but before thinking about joining any group, I have to find that job first. I was able to set up two job interviews from here via internet so lets see what happens.

I´ve lost 51 pounds so far but I am so impatient to go below the 300. It is funny how things are because I remember being 200 and I felt like Godzilla.

I found a doctor in Edina. His name is Luis Laguna and it seems like he is the one for my follow ups in MN. That is my next step after I get that job.

My gastric bypass

Dec 13, 2008

Hello,

I´ve decided to share my story and the reasons that took me down this road because having gastric bypass surgery is a point of no return and changes your life forever.

But let me tell you a little something about myself first. I was born in Puerto Rico on April 7, 1969. Both my parents are from Dominican Republic but at the time they were both residents in Puerto Rico. After living some years abroad, my Dad decided he wanted to go back to his country, so we moved to Santo Domingo when I was around six years old and grew up there.

In 2002, I started to feel I needed a change in my life and moved to Minnesota in 2004.

It was a good decision for reasons too complicated to explain right now but everything ( well, almost everything ) was going great except that I began to lose control over my eating habits.

When I arrived to MN my weight was 200 pounds which was already too much, but I was still able to move and feel somewhat good about myself.

I guess all the changes and the new experiences and challenges were too much for me, so I did what we obese people do, I resolved all my frustrations with food.

Trying to make this story short, my top weight was 368 pounds. I no longer was able to move as I did, in fact I could hardly walk, my sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure were high.

I found myself in a hole from where I could not get out on my own. I called my parents and explained my situation. I told them that this was critical and I needed help.

Asking for help is was one of the most difficult decisions you can make because you feel guilty and embarassed, I mean you should be able to control what you put in your mouth right?

With help from my parents (God bless them) they were very supportive in every way and insisted it was better for me to have the procedure here in Santo Domingo where they could take care of me.

So, I had to quit my job in Woodbury, MN because I knew this was going to take at least two months but I didn't´t know exactly when I was going to be able to get back to MN.

One of my friends at my job told me this was just too drastic. Yes, some people think there are other ways and having this procedure is kind of a short cut but NO, IT IS NOT.  It is a life change experience. After your surgery your digestive system is completely different and you have to learn to eat all over again. I agree this is NOT FOR EVERYBODY. If you´re not willing or able to change the way you eat after the surgery this is not for you.

In my case it was the right thing to do. I do not regret this decision one bit. I´m out of the danger zone and already feeling strong.

I had my procedure on November 4, 2008 in CEDIMAT which is a clinic in Santo Domingo. My surgeon is amazing and his name is Luis Betances.

So far I´ve lost around 35 pounds in a month.

If your very curious about this surgery you can visit my doctor´s web page www.bariatrica.com. It is in Spanish but it has an English option you can click on.

With Love,

Amparo
