Well, I can't believe I'm starting my weight loss journey AGAIN, but here I am.  7 Years ago I had gastric bypass surgery.  It was successful and I lost over 200 lbs.  I researched all the different surgeries at the time and actually felt that the DS surgery was my best option.  I made an appointment with Dr. Husted in Nashville at the time.  I then found out that my insurance paid for in-state surgeons better than those out-of-state, therefore, I decided to find a surgeon in Birmingham.
I went with Dr. Richard Stahl.  He is a good surgeon, but I don't feel that he helps each person determine what is best for them, and doesn't take into consideration their eating habits and lifestyle.  However, at the time, I was just thrilled to be getting my "life-changing" surgery.
Everything went well.  I didn't have any complications, wasn't sick that much, and did really well - for a while.  After about 3 years, I noticed I started gaining weight back.  I could eat more and it seemed almost like it had been before I had surgery.  I beat myself up over and over, knowing that I had failed.
Finally, I started looking into having revision surgery to the DS.  I found Dr. Husted again, read all his information, sent him my medical records, including an upper GI test, and talked with him on different occasions.  He informed me that my surgery had failed me due to metabolic reasons, not that I had failed the surgery.  I knew that here was someone that put the needs of their patients first and did what was best for EACH of them, rather than line everyone up and call out lap-band or RNY - take your pick.
This brings me to where I am today - 12-29-08.  I have been denied twice by my insurance - Blue Cross Blue Shield of AL for this revision surgery.  Dr. Husted and his staff have been excellent at helping me to obtain this.  I have jumped through hoops for the last few months it seems and am getting no where.  I have one appeal left and am currently trying to gather all my information together before sending it to the insurance.
My health is much worse now than it was before I had gastric bypass.  As far as blood pressure, diabetes goes - I'm lucky - I don't have those problems.  I do have problems because of my weight - depression, stress incontinence, arthritus but my biggest problem is in mobility.  I am having so much trouble getting around and have to use a cane.  My knees and hip hurt constantly.  I recently went to a bone/joint doctor and found out that I have bone rubbing against bone in my hip and essentially need a hip replacement.  He wants me to go to Birmingham for this, so I'm hoping that this development will make a difference.
I have a flower/gift shop which I love, and it is becoming harder and harder for me to continue with the work there.  I know that something has to change for me or I'm at risk of losing not only my business, but my independence as well.
