Square one

Hi to all!
My name is Jim.  I'm 58 and live in St Louis, MO.  Divorced and have two wonderful sons.  The youngest is 24 and is in the Army Reserves.  He is a junior at the University of Missouri.  He works out quite vigorously with free weights, jogs and bikes.  Has for years.  My oldest son is 38 and is also in the Army.  He is in Special Operations and is currently deployed in Afghanistan.  He has been on two other tours.  He graduated with two degrees from the University of Missouri and is currently working on his masters.  He travels the world in his spare time and just recently climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro.  Next he and my youngest son will be climbing the Andes and then going into the Amazon.

I also traveled throughout the world and was in great shape when I was younger.  Now I'd like to keep up with these guys but I'm certainly not in any kind of shape to do so...yet.  I let myself get out of shape.  I've gained weight and taken it off several times.  Each time I gained the weight back I ended up weighing more than before.  Now I've really out done myself and piled on a bunch of weight.  I had a couple of back surgeries and knee surgeries a couple of years ago and kind of sat around on by butt afterwards.  I used to smoke but quit cold turkey at my first back surgery.  I knew there was no way the nurses were going to haul me outside to have a smoke.  So I decided that this would be an excellent opportunity to quit.  I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a couple of years ago.  No real issues with that.  Have kept my numbers in great shape.  So now it's time to deal with the weight once and for all.  I see these guys hobbling around and decided that there's no way I want to wind up like that.  I want to be able to be back in great shape again.  Like I said, I want to keep up with my sons and have some great adventures with them.  I also like to trout fish and it's damn hard with all this extra weight.  I also am a photographer and it's a lot more difficult to go out in the field to take pictures now.

I've decided to have the sleeve gastrectomy.  After extensive research this seemed like the best choice for me anyway.  I started this journey in March.  I've gone through all the required assessments and finally met the surgeon last week.  He said he wants me to lose 20-40 lbs. prior to the surgery.  He wants to see me again, to check my weight, in the middle of July.  I made an appointment for July 20.  I'm going to bust my butt to lose at least 20 lbs. by then so he'll submit the paperwork to the insurance co. then.  I've already lost 6 lbs. since I met with him and will keep on it.  After viewing the VSG forum, as part of my research, I've been impressed and inspired by a lot of you.  Thank you guys for that.  It has also helped with answering a lot of questions and addressing issues I had.  I'm really touched at the caring many of you have given to others.

I decided that I want to be part of this group to obtain information, inspiration, and friends as well as give back as much as I possibly can. So I signed up and was immedately welcomed by a couple of you, which I was extremely suprised and most grateful.  I did not expect that all.  It's really refreshing to find this quality and quantity of support for we "losers".  Thanks to all & God bless.
