Here's what I did

Jan 25, 2011

I thought I would document what I did in case it might help others. When I first had my consultation appt with the surgeon and nutritionist, I was given the pre-op diet. I did not have a date yet and had no idea when it would be but knew that protein shakes would now become part of my life. I knew I would not succeed if I could not make them work. I went out and bought two different kinds of protein from Walmart, Body Fortress (Whey) in Chocolate and EAS (Soy) in Vanilla. I began working these in to my daily life until I was drinking three a day. Once I got that down (perk that I liked them!), I started walking. I began with 15 minutes, then 20, 30 until I was walking almost 4 miles in one hour. On the days it was too cold to walk (I live in Northern Michigan) I would do Dance Workout on my Wii. By the time my surgery date rolled around I had lost 21 pounds and felt that I was completely committed and able to do this.

Week 2 after my surgery I was told to begin walking 30 minutes a day and I did on my treadmill. At first it did hurt my abdomen and I was only walking at a leisurely stroll,  but each day it was less painful and I was able to increase my speed. I concentrate on getting my protein and water in each day which is still a struggle.

I am completely amazed at how quickly the weight is coming off. It had taken 4 months of a strenuous weight management program that consisted of counting calories (only 800 for me!) and major cardio and resistance training to lose this much weight and it was HARD and often times DEFEATING.

I am now almost 3 weeks out from surgery and down 40 pounds today. Yes, 21 pounds was lost pre-op but 40 pounds is 40 pounds.....I'm counting it!

I feel energetic and can't wait for spring to go ride my bike. I hope this helps you some. Good luck on your journey!
