On top of the world!

Mar 30, 2009

Not to long after my surgery, I started a swimming class over at the local community college. I grew up swimming so it felt kind of funny enrolling in a beginning swimming class. The first day we swam 16 laps and I was huffing and puffing. Part of it was that I was still weak from the surgery granted, but I've been really out of shape these last several years.

On Friday at hit a big milestone for me which was largely driven by being stuck on a plateau at 246 pounds for two weeks. I hit the pool planning to swim 50 laps, and I ended up doing 130. That was 11 laps short of 2 miles. Had I known that at the time, I would have pushed out 11 more laps hit the mark. Still it was a huge number for me. I set a goal then that I was going to swim 3 miles in a session by June.

Today, I jumped in the pool determined to swim another 130 laps. I swam right through my class, through the break between classes, and right through the next swimming class. After 2-1/2 hours in the pool, I completed 212 laps which is almost exaxtly 3 miles.

When I stepped on to dry land, my legs were a little weak and I felt very heavy, but inside it felt awesome. Even when I was in good shape, I wouldn't have imagined swimming 3 miles. The 2nd best thing about this was, even as I was climbing out of the pool, I knew I could do more. The very best thing about this, was when I jumped on the scale afterwards, I weighed in at 234.8, over 10 pounds below my plateau.
