I talked to my husband about the surgery today and he is being very supportive. I also called an old colleague of mine from teaching that had bypass surgery several years ago. She was very blunt and honest with me. She had the surgery when Scott & White was just starting their program and had the "open" surgery. She had 2 complications afterwards as well. The one thing that struck me though was she said she would do it again in heart beat! I told her about my insurnace and she said I would be a fool not do it. I am getting more anxious (in a good way) about the possibility of having WLS.

Today, I went to my PCP and asked for a referral to the Bariatric Surgery Clinic. At first he was a little hesitant because I really don't look 100+ lbs over weight, but when I pointed out my weight, BMI, and hypertension he agreed that I was good candidate and gladly wrote the referral. I then contacted the Bariatric Clinic and found that the next seminar is on Monday, June 18th just a few days away. I called my mother and she was more than happy to come watch kids so I can go. She was also very supportive of my decision to look into it. She did bring up a good point, though. Would my insurance pay for it? I called the Bariatric Clinic and left a message for the financial couselor and sent her an email, but have not received a response. I decided I would just call my insurance company (CIGNA) myself and to my surprise they were very helpful. They said my policy did cover the procedure and that all I needed was a letter of medical necessity from my doctor that included a description of other things I had tried and that this is a last resort for me. They also pointed out that I have a $2000 max out of pocket expense on my policy after my $1000 decutible. This is great news since I have almost met the $1000 deductible. That means I will only have to pay about $2000 for the surgery! We will see if it really goes that smoothly. I have not told my husband that I am seriously considering this procedure. He has mentioned getting it for himself, but I am not sure how he will react. He has a littel jealous streak, so I worry that it will widen as I lose weight. LOL
