My name is Marie and I am 58 years old. I have been happily married for 38 years. I have a son who is 31 and a daughter who is 28. I have 2 grandsons - 11 and 6 years old. I live on Ohio's north coast.
I have 3 brothers, one of which had an open RNY about 5 years ago. He is doing well although he did gain a little of his weight back.
I have been overweight my entire adult life. I would have had this surgery done years ago, but we were without insurance benefits for 20 years and I could not afford to self pay. One year ago our circumstances changed and we now have insurance coverage. I didn't know though that the insurance would cover bariatric surgery until this past November. At this point, I still don't know how much I will have to pay because they only pay 50% up to $20,000. I went to a seminar in January, jumped through all the hoops and now have a surgery date of April 4, 2007 for an open RNY procedure with my gallbladder to be removed at the same time. I have at least 200# to lose, so it will be a long journey.
I discovered this site about a month ago, but have mostly lurked with just a couple postings. The information that everyone contribues has been very helpful. One woman has sent me some clothes and another is sending me some protein supplements to try. I've also met a man here that lives in my town only a few blocks from me who had an open RNY 18 months ago. He is in the same program I am and has been very helpful in providing information about what to expect.
