I did it!

Feb 19, 2008

I found out on Feb 9th that I had diabetes from the surgeon's nurse.  She said that my blood sugar was extremely high (over 198 if I remember right) on my last labs and I was told that my surgery was probably going to be postponed unless I could get it down.  I only had 4 days and 2 of them were the weekend.  I went back to the hospital for some more labs 2 days pre op and had them test it again.  It was still high but coming down.  They told me to go ahead and come in for the surgery and they would test it right before and decide then.  So I went in with the expectation that I would not be having surgery.  To my surprise it was down and they got me ready.  I was caught a little off guard!   So because of all this I didn't really get to have that "I'm having my surgery today!" feeling that most have. :(

I had it that morning and was back in my room by 1:00pm.  I was of course groggy but they had me up walking right away and I went home the very next day.  I have been home for 5 days and been pretty sleepy until yesterday.  I have also pretty much cut out my pain meds.  I am feeling a lot better now, just a bit sore.  I weighed myself this morning and have already lost 12 lbs!

Oh!  and also I have been checking my blood sugar and it has been low ever since.  So I am guessing that maybe it was just something I was eating that put my levels so high.  I will keep checking it but hopefully I will not need any meds!
