7/13/07 5 days after surgery

Jul 13, 2007

Wow,   I am finally on the losing side!   The day of sugery went very well.  I had a complete peace with the procedure.  I even left pre-op singing.  Can't say I did to much singing after waking up in recovery.  I was such a weird feeling, your last memory being in absolutely no pain then the next being in severe pain.  My first words were "when can I have more pain meds?" followed shortly by "and nausea meds?"

The first day I remember the irratation of the NG tube and the complete unwillingingness of my body to follow the simpliest commands.  I felt like someone had beat me with a baseball bat.   Also I had the driest throat that I have ever had in my life.  Ice cubes were a blessing.  The first walk wasn't that bad, but it was in no way pleasant.  I just kept repeating to myself that it was for my own good.

The second day was marginally better. Did a lot more walking and had alot of info to digest.   The absolute worst part was the swallow test.  That was the most disgusting liquid I have ever had.    After the test it was back to the room.  I had a short visit by Dr. Jawad and was given the good news - No Leaks!  and I was good for D/C later that day.  I then recieved a clear liquid tray.   Nausea got the best of me so I didn't get much down.  I will have to say I was one of the lucky ones when it comes to nausea.   I might have gotten sick, but nothing came up, not even dry heaves.  Thank God.   After the "lunch"  it was a trip down the hall for the G-tube and Physical Therapy class.  Lots of info, was very glad I had my mom there to help me remember.  Once that was over it was back to my room for my first G-tube dressing change and the I was discharged home shortly after around 3pm.  I got pain/nausea med just before D/C so the ride home was ok.

Days 3-4 were gradually getting better.  The one thing that I was having trouble with was sleeping in a bed.  Going from prone to sitting put a lot of pressure on my G-tube site.  I finally realizied that it was easier to sleep on the couch with my feet up.  Day 4 brought about the full liquid diet and it went very well.  Apple sauce is my friend.  I never really liked it before, but now we get along fine.

Today is day 5 and I am starting to get stir crazy.  I am now ready to get out of the house for more than my walks.  I have watched and rewatched everthing on TV.   The worst part is that it is summer and there isn't really anything good on in the first place.  I decided that now was a good time to update for the site and now that it's done I am at a loss for what to do with the rest of my day.  Here is hoping that something will spark my interest.

7/7/07 2 days till the big day

Jul 07, 2007

I am finally there.  Only two more days to go.  Have been on the liquid diet for the past 2 wks, and it really hasn't been as bad as I thought.  As long as I keep busy I don't think about it much.  My pre-op appointment was on the 5th,  and boy do they throw alot of info at you.  At least they sent' me home with a dvd with everything that they discussed that day.  All of my ducks are finally in order and I will start my clear liquids tomorrow. :)

6/4/07 (pre) pre-op diet

Jun 04, 2007

Well, I have finally started my (pre) pre-op diet.  I have begun a low carb diet simular to South beach.  I am not much of a cook, so I am sure this will be rough for me.  I think I will be almost relived to go to the shakes b/c it doesn't require alot of meal planning. I do have a confession.  I cheated already with a handfull of gummy bears :(  . I am very  dissapointed in myself, but what's done is done.  At least they are all gone , so out of sight out of mind.  Here is hoping tomorrow will be better.  No scratch that, here is knowing that tomorrow will be better!!!!
