Had my VSG surgery 7/20/09!

Jul 30, 2009

Just wanted to share that I had my VSG surgery (gastric sleeve) on Monday, 7/20/09! Spent 2 nights in the hospital before heading home to my hubby, 2 kids, and my mom who is visiting for the surgery. Started off the week before surgery with a scope test on Monday, July 13th, to check inside my stomach for h pylori bacteria and just look around. Then, I started my full liquid diet. Not bad once you get past the first day of thinking about eating. Surgery went wonderfully, no complications, no problems. Up and walking around later that night (like 4am!), once I stopped using that dilaudin pump! Bit of a hangover the next morning from being off that drug, but swallow test went well, and I had my first 'meal' at the hospital... orange popsicle, chicken flavored broth, orange jell-o and hot water for tea. I only ate 2 bites of jell-o and drank some broth before I was completely full!

I went home the next day (Wed) with the drainage tube in my side. That first shower in the hospital is a bit different with the drain in my side, but it's taped to my stomach well, so no worries. Got dressed to go home, and nothing fit! Not even the shorts I wore to the hospital! Next time, should remember to bring LOOSE FITTING clothing, like 2 sizes bigger. My tummy was so bloated from being filled with IV fluids and from the air! Finally slept in my own bed with some pillows propping me up like a hospital bed. Took my meds, though I HATE the ones for h pylori (bacteria in stomach). I'm allergic to penicillan, so I have to take 2 terrible tasting pills, broken up, making them taste even worse. Also taking Nexium (broken up for first few days) to prevent heartburn or other probs, though I have no history of it. Love my liquid Reglan (for preventing nausea), it tastes like fruit punch. And, of course, I love Oxycodone, though I barely take any now. It also tastes like a melted fruit punch popsicle. :)

Had my tube taken out on Tuesday, 28 July, and there's just a tiny dot on my abdomen now. No pain meds needed for that, just a deep breath and then blow it all out. Feels a bit weird coming out, since I didn't know how far in it went. It's over in about 5 seconds, so no worries there. All my incisions are healing wonderfully, too!

Best news... I've lost 20lbs so far! Probably about 16 in the week since surgery, and ~4 in the week prior to the surgery thanks to the full liquid diet I was on.
Next doc appt on Tuesday, August 18th, so probably won't weigh in much before then. I like being surprised at the office!
