Happy New Year!

Dec 27, 2008

Hello again,
I hope everyone had a fabulous holiday.  I know I haven't felt this good in a very long time, especially during the holiday season.  My weight loss was slow since last month, but still it's moving and clothes are fitting me so much better.  I am down 70 pounds since my gastric bypass on 8/25/08.  I can now go into a store like Fashion Bug and shop on the smaller side.  What a great feeling!!  I still have a lot more to go and I will not give up if I hit a plateau.  They can be discouraging but if it happens I'll just have to change up my eating/exercise routine.  I've uploaded several pictures that were taken on Christmas day.  What a difference from my birthday pictures in August (I cannot even stand to look at those).
Well, Happy New Year to everyone, keep safe, healthy, and happy!!

Update

Nov 30, 2008

Hello again,

Just writing to update my progress.  As of last week, which was 3 months since gastric bypass, I have lost 62 pounds.  Sometimes it seems that I go through a little stand still for about a week to a week and a half.  I thought it was too early in the game for that but it has happened once or twice then it seems that I drop a few pounds.  Anyhow, I am really starting to feel very good about myself.  I've gone from a size 18-20 in jeans, to a 15 and that is a terrific feeling.  I will try to get some new pics up soon.

It still seems as if I can tolerate just about anything so I am that much more diligent with myself.  I still weigh and measure my food to keep me on tract.  I even weighed my turkey on Thanksgiving...LOL  No food has ever made me sick since the surgery, which is kind of scary.  My new tummy is very tolerant.  I eat sugar free cookies and candy when I get a craving for a sweet.  Anyhow, everyone, keep up the good work!!

As always, good luck to everyone on their journey!!

Hello again!!

Oct 21, 2008

Hi everyone,

Another quick update.  Yesterday made two months post-op for me.  I weighed myself today and I have now lost a total of 50 pounds!  I can hardly believe it myself, but I am feeling so much better physically, and emotionally.  I just wanted to say that right after the surgery, I had a really difficult time, meaning I felt hungry all of the time.  I think a lot of it had to do w/ the fact that I really couldn't eat a wide variety of foods.  I was soooo afraid that it wasn't going to curb itself, but thank God it has!  I was actually questioning whether or not I made the right decision, but food isn't a priority for me anymore and I know now that I DID make the right decision.  I am so glad I had the gastric bypass and I would not change it for anything!!

AS ALWAYS...GOOD LUCK TO ALL ON THEIR JOURNEY!!!

Just a quick update

Oct 09, 2008

Hello again,

Just another quick update on the weight loss.  It's been 6 and a half weeks since surgery and this week I hit 40 lbs. lost, and it feels awesome!  I have incorporated a lot more walking into my rountine lately and I can tell that has helped me significantly.  I would like your opinions on the following:

Is 40 a good amount to lose in 6 weeks or should I have lost more by now?  Is this average?

Thanks,

Weight loss

Sep 24, 2008

Hello everyone,

Just stopping by to note some progress.  It will be two weeks tomorrow since I've been weighed and I do not have a scale at home.  However, I remembered that we have a scale at work in our storage space.  It says I lost 12 more pounds, which brings me to a total of 33 lbs. lost since surgery.  (One month).  To look at myself, I do not see a lot of change, but I can tell by my clothes.  I can literally pick out any pair of jeans in my closet now and everyone of them fits me comfortably.  I don't dread, "What am I going to wear to work today" anymore.  It's a great feeling!!

Also, my appetite has curbed.  In the beginning, I was always hungry and I know some of that was head hunger, which is a son of a "B."  Now I can eat measured and weighed food and feel content afterwards.  Yesterday, I couldn't even finish a can of soup.  I was wondering when this was going to happen because it always feels like I could eat more than allowed, allthough I was not about to risk getting sick.

As always, good luck to everyone on their journey to a healthier you!!

Doctor visit

Sep 11, 2008

Hello again!!

I saw Dr. Pohl today for the first time since the surgery and I lost 21 lbs. since being released from the hospital on 8/28/08.  I had not weighed myself since being at the hospital so I was kind of anxious to see what I lost and I was happy w/ that.  As he said though, his part is over and now the hard part begins because he said eventually down the road, I will be able to eat almost anything and it's up to me to maintain this throughout my life.  I plan on going to one of the 5 support groups held in my state.  I go back to see him in 3 months and I have to have blood work done at least 2 weeks before that visit.  I did tell him that when I was released from the hospital that I had about 3 difficult days because I was so hungry and he said that can happen.  Also, he did add another vitamin to the list; I have to start taking vitamin D now also.

Anyhow, even though it's only 21 pounds lost so far, I can already feel a difference in some of my clothing and that feels great!

I'll keep updating my progrss...

Good luck to everyone on their journey!!!

Short update

Sep 08, 2008

Hello Everyone!

Just a quick note to say that I am doing fine.  I started pureed food today and I weigh it, but feel like I could eat more.  Once I wait awhile, I do realize that I am content.  I'm drinking water but I need to get more in.  I see my surgeon this Thursday and I'll finally be able to see if I've lost.  I do not have a scale at home and I don't think that I want one because I would end up being a slave to it.  I'll post more once I see the doctor...

Take care,
Dawnie

Surgery is over!!

Aug 30, 2008

Hello everyone!  I had surgery on 8/25/08 and I came home on 8/28/08.  I am doing well, just sore.  With my experience, I would have to say that the most painful part of the whole ordeal was dealing w/ the gas pains afterwards.  I walked the halls in the hospital every day, several times a day to get that gas moving.  If it weren't for the gas pains, I would just have been sore.  They will not give you anything for it either, they say you have to work it out naturally.  Today is Saturday, 8/30/08 and I am doing much better with that.  Every day gets a little easier.

One thing that I definately did not anticipate was hunger.  I have been famished since I got out of the hospital and was really confused by this.  I thought something was wrong with me so I went onto obesityhelp and found out that this has happened to other people out there.  It's an awful feeling to be starving and know that you cannot touch anything but the protein drinks.  I am having a difficult time w/ them also because I was on them two weeks before the surgery and I'm pretty sick of them.  The smell turns me off but I have to drink them.  I was told that I wouldn't have a real appetite for 6 months to a year, but this didn't happen in my case.  I cannot wait to try something w/ substance but I have to be very patient.  In the meantime, it is very difficult to deal with.  Please let me know if any of you have had an experience like this and what you did to help yourself deal w/ it.

Take care everyone and talk soon!!

Pre-op is done

Aug 15, 2008

Had my pre-op on 8/12 @ Roger Williams Hospital in RI.  Everyone was very pleasant and I did not have to wait at all.  When I was finished w/ one person, they quickly moved me on to the next.  The first thing I did was meet w/ a nurse.  She took my b/p and temp. and we went over the questionaire that I had to bring in w/ me.  I then met w/ the anesthesiologist and he just had me take some deep breathes while he listened to my heart.  He explained his role during the surgery.  Next, it was off to have blood taken-4 tubes to be exact, an EKG which took like 40 seconds, and a chest x-ray.  All this took just a little over an hour.  Great!!

The liquid diet:  It has been tough.  It gets a little easier as the days pass; Today is day 4 for me.  I have 3 carnation instant breakfast drinks 3 times a day.  Fat free mind you w/ fat free milk.  They aren't as gross as I had anticipated.  I can have a Lean Cuisine or Healthy Choice at dinnertime w/ veggies.  I also had to start taking my vitamins on the day the liquid diet started.  So the big day is approaching, only one week from Monday.  I cannot believe it's finally approaching!!

This week I have to get my affairs in order at work so the other case manager can case manage my families.  I know this sounds corny but I have two cats and I am going to miss them while I am in the hospital.  I do not have children, so they are my babies.

Well, I just wanted to give an update for anyone who is waiting on their pre-op and is wondering what to expect.  I will write again before I go in the hospital.  Take care and good luck to everyone on their journey!!

Surgery is approaching...

Aug 06, 2008

Hello everyone!

Well, my journey started in February 2008, when I decided that I wanted Gastric Bypass surgery.  The date is quickly (finally) approaching and I cannot wait.  My pre-op is just around the corner, 8/12/08.  I start my liquid diet on this date also.  I think that is going to be tough, but it will be worth it in the end.  I will try to keep up with the website and post my progress, starting right after my pre-op.  Thanks for reading and to everyone on here who helped to inspire me.
