Day 2 home

Aug 10, 2008

Today is a better day...I have gotten in all of my protein drinks in today but not the waters.  I usually feel full after the protein and that makes it a challenge to get more than a bottle of water in for the rest of the day.
I am 5 days out and had been in absolute agony since surgery with gas.  One sure fire way of relieving the gas, at least for me, is leaning over the counter or the bed and have someone massage your lower back.  OMG......I went from being in pain to my eyes lighting up like the fourth of July!    I felt everything moving around and gurgling and boom.... instant relief!!!!     Yes...I have been taking the stuff for gas they sent me home with but this was wonderful.  I felt instant relief.  That we did for 2 days.  I had a call from Barix asking if I had had the good ol BM yet and I said no.  She said take milk of magnesia to get that going if I had not had one, so I took 3 tbsp last night before bed.  I woke up at 2am and I now think that I have released the majority of my gas from surgery.  Not sure where they thought the BM would be coming from ....the full fluids??Yes, I still have a bit  of gas left but nothing like what it was and that makes me feel so much better.

First day home

Aug 07, 2008

Well I had a decent nights sleep last night in my own bed.  Was up about 2 am and again at 6:30 am for pain meds but otherwise not too bad.  It was a bit difficult to get in and out of bed due to menouvering yourself in and out.  Once you are in bed and comfortable it is great but it takes you 10 minutes get yourself situated.  It took me all day today to get 20g of protein in.  Hoping tomorrow will be better for that.

Day 3, going home??

Aug 06, 2008

Seems today is discharge day today despite the dry heaves I had last night and today.  Apparently that is due to the swelling of the pouch from surgery and the hole being smaller than some.  I am told that will feel better with time.  Off to have a shower and then get ready to leave.  The trip home took 5 1/2 hours instead of the 3 1/2 it would normally take due to having to stop every hour to walk around for a bit and go to the bathroom.   All I can say is I LOVE MY BED!!!

Day after surgery

Aug 05, 2008

Well here we are, day 2 and I have absolutely no energy to get up out of bed to walk.  Such gas pains.  They were absolutely miserable and would not go away.  Pain still up there but the cathater came out and the pain pump came off.  They are using injectable pain killers via the IV when needed.  I was asking for them every 2 -3 hours but they were not able to give them until 4 hours so I was on 2 different cocktails, the pain stuff and the muscle relaxer.  Didn't sleep well the night before....respritory in every 2 hours to do your breathing and the nurses at the same time checking your urine output.  Walked a bit today but was just too tired and too sore to do anything more.  Was falling asleep sitting up on the edge of the bed.  About 4pm that day my IV had to come out as it has moved and my hand was swelling.  OMG....what if I don't get enough fluids in...sucking on ice bits and trying to sip sip sip.  Loved the ice!  Pain with sipping.  Nausea tonight.  Maybe things will be better tomorrow.

Out of surgery!

Aug 04, 2008

OMG....the pain in my stomach was absolutely excruciating to say the least.  Apparently they had given me 7 shots over a period of an hour of different pain killers and nothing seemed to touch it.  They changed my pain pump to the strongest they could put in and that didn't help at all.  Oh the pain, I absolutely couldn't stand it and I am sure dying right then would have been better than feeling the way I did at that moment.  Then the wonder drug.....the shot with a muscle relaxer....ahhh.....finally some relief.  Nurse said that the color instantly came back in my face and I just totally relaxed and fell asleep for a bit.  Maxed out the pain pump and had intermittant shots of extra pain meds that evening and that helped out somewhat.
