Started the process

Sep 23, 2011

So, last night I attended the Novus Centers informational meeting. Dr. John DePeri conducted the session, showing a PowerPoint about obesity, the disease, and the different types of surgeries the practice performs weekly.

I was very shocked to learn I am what would be considered super morbid obese due to a BMI of 48. I guess until recently, I have turned a blind eye to what my husband has been trying to tell me for 2 years. This came to a head due to recently attempting to get pregnant, I know, a woman that is nearly 300lbs shouldn't even be thinking about this, but we were. We have been trying to conceive for the past 6 months using fertility treatments. I guess I was running around with my head in the sand bc my OBGYN was prescribing the pills in an effort to placate me and help my PCOS. I have now come to realize that if I did become pregnant, not only would I be extremely high risk, I could possibly die.

Last night was an eye opening experience. I am excited and trepidations about engaging in this journey. I know it will be a lot of hard work on my part, but after being over weight for my entire adult life (I am 30), this is the time to make a change. This is my first post of many. I don't know if anyone will be reading this, but I am going to be doing it to help me see where I have started and help chart where I need to go.

Right now, I have a follow up appointment with the Novus Centers to discuss insurance and how to begin the process of getting bariatric surgery. At this point, I am pretty much set on getting the vertical sleeve. I have already started watching what I eat and using myfitnesspal to chart my caloric intake and exercise. I am changing my life, starting now, one day at a time.
