Surgery Experience

Well, I was an absolute nervous wreck the night before and the morning of surgery. Who would have thought that it would have been possible to end up with diarrhea the morning of surgery after doing the bowel prep the day before LOL. Well with me it was possible!!
Ok so anyway. I had to get up about 3:30 a.m. so I could be ready to leave the house by 4:15 a.m. to make it to the hospital by 5:00 a.m. I spent the night at my parent's the night before so that my mom could get me to the hospital and my dad would be there to care for my son.
It was soooo hard to actually leave the house when the time came, I just wanted to lay there and hold my baby.......well he's not a baby anymore he's 10-year-old. There was a part of me that was scared I might not make it through surgery and that this would be the last time I would be able to touch my beautiful boy! I finally had to tear myself away from him and go get into the car.
Ok so we drove to the hospital and once we got out of the car, I felt like I was going to throw up. I was sooo anxious and scared. Well they called me into to pay my $100.00 copay and then I had to have a seat in the waiting area.
Once my turn came, which was fairly quick as I was the first one of the day, the nurse called me back. She gave me a gown (which by the way actually fit), a hat and some paper booties. She then hooked me up to my I.V.'s and then went and brought my mom back with me to wait.
Once I realized that I had two hours to wait still until surgery, I started freaking out again. I almost told my mother " I can't do this I am too scared!" Well I didn't realize that the nurse had already given me something to relax me and just about that time I had started to kick in. Okay, I have a question, why is it sooo COLD in the pre-op holding??? I was freezing and so the nurse hooked my up to some type of warmer which was a tube blowing warm air into my bed and after that I got quite cozy and actually fell asleep until my surgeon and anesthesiologist came into to speak with me.
Shortly after that, my mom gave me a kiss and they wheeled me off to the operating room. The last thing I remember is being told to scoot off of the bed onto the operating table.
The next thing I know I was waking up and there was a nurse talking to me and my mom was also there. I asked her "when is my surgery" she laughed and told me "it's already over with babe". LOL how funny is that, I was sooo worked up over having my surgery and then it was over with just like that!!!
I had to spend the first night in the ICU due to having sleep apnea. Well that night I got hardly any sleep at all between everyone coming in to check on me and all the noise out at the nurse's station. Respiratory therapy came in several times and gave me breathing treatments and man were those guys CUTE!!!! LOL
Oh, yeah they also made me get up out of bed and walk the hallways a few times that first day after surgery. That was pretty painful, but once it was over I just got back in bed and pushed that "happy" littlle pain button.
I have to say though that I had the best care possible and that everyone was very competent at what they do! It was a very pleasant hospital experience!!
Ok, so I made it through that night and then the next day they moved me to the regular surgical floor. I was reluctant to leave the ICU as I really liked the staff there but to my relief the staff on the other floor was just as awesome! Thankfully, I slept quite a bit better that night on the regular floor. I had a private room and it was all the way down the end of the hallway so I hardly heard any noise, but of course I still had a steady stream of people coming in and out giving me quality care. There was one thing though..........I lost my cute Respiratory therapists when I changed floors.......LOL! But the girls on this floor were just at good at what they do so I guess that was okay.
So now it was Wednesday and my surgeon, Dr. Leport came to see me and checked my belly and told me that I could go home if I liked. The nurse came back after he left and asked me"What time would you like to be discharged? " That in itself shocked me as usually you are at their mercy and it is whenever they decide to get around doing the necessary paperwork. I told her" ASAP and she told me to call for my ride and she would return. Well, I kid you not she was back in my room in under 15 minutes with all of my discharge paperwork and said "just give me a call when your ride arrives so I can bring down a wheelchair".
My mom got there about noonish and I called the nurse and she was there with my wheelchair in under five minutes. She wheeled me out to the car and my mother and I were on our way home.
Let me tell you it was sooooo good to be able to see my beautiful boy's face and know that GOD still wants me to be here on Earth with him. Thank you Jesus for all of the blessings in my life especially this little one!!!
