In the beginning...

My name is Dirk Parsons and I started gaining weight at 23. When I got a few pounds overweight, it wasn't too hard to lose. By the time I was 30, it became increasingly difficult for me to shed the pounds. At the time I was a paramedic, hanging around the station on a slow day didn't help. Our passtime was eating...I ended up with a bad case of the EMS spread. At age 38, I had my first heart attack. I kept fighting the weight loss to get it under control. Unfortunately, I didn't succeed too often. I am an avid hunter, fisher, and skydiver... all of which put me in the international lier's club.. hahah !! I am single and hopefully not getting married any time soon. My philosophy is "Marriage is a general misunderstanding between 2 people." Just kidding!! I have 2 daughters and an ex-wife. I love them all.
On a more serious note:
On Jan. 6 2006, I had a lap band surgery. I began at 250 lbs and I lost 40 with the band. This worked well for me at first, but the band eroded. That summer, my niece and her best friend lived with me at my beach house, so that they could make money for their education at UNC and NCSU respectively. Needless to say, I began drinking Duplin Wine to deal with these two!! HAHA.. I love them though. As my pantry started filling up with chips, pudding, ice cream, cheese cake, and anything else unhealthy, my weight loss began to slow.... slow... slow... go backwards... Who knew Duplin wine and sugar free/fat free pudding would erode your band!! haha
I had been hearing about the VSG, so I got an appointment with Dr. Jose Rodriguez and Dr. Guillermo Alvarez on Aug. 25, 2006. The care I got was unbelievable.. This surgery seems to be working much better than the lap band. As of right now, I'm 33 lbs from my goal and the weight loss is slowing down going through the home stretch.
I have a wonderful best friend named Lisa, we jokingly call her "Whale".. haha She's more like a skinny flounder. One of my favorite past times is going to my farm and playing in the dirt with my dad and brother.. I guess you never really grow up. I have a dog named Jill and a claw-less cat name Scratch. And a crazy Brit that lives nest door, whom my niece mocks at 3 in the morning when she come in from the bar, it's always a fun time when they're around.
I live in paradise. Actually, there are two of them. There's the beach, which is nice in the off season, and there is Troy, which is nice all the time.. (My farm)
