Almost Christmas!

Dec 11, 2008

Well, here I am, 10 months after RNY surgery.  I have lost a total of 178 pounds, including the 50 pounds that I lost over an 8 month period before my surgery!  What wonders!  I am so looking forward to Christmas.
Weight loss just opens a whole new world....I took my kids to a water park in August and actually went down a water slide without worrying about flying over the edge!!  Hadn't even tried that since my teen years

Six Months, Post-Op

Aug 06, 2008

I went to see my surgeon yesterday for my six-month post-op visit.  He was very happy with my 105 pound weight loss so far.  I still have about 80 pounds to go, but I'm getting closer.  I was concerned about losing so much more slowly in the last month.  I told my doc that I wondered if it was because I added bread products back in at 5 months post-op, as per my nutrition guidelines from his nutritionist.  He told me that it is much too early for me to add carbs, so I know that I will have to learn to live without them again.  Not easy, but I will have to do it to keep up the weight loss that I've worked so hard to acheive!

5 months out...success!

Jul 20, 2008

I am now 5 months out from my RNY surgery and have lost 100 pounds now.  I lost an additional 50 pounds during the 9 months prior to the surgery, which brings my grand total up to 150 pounds.  I would still like to lose another 100 pounds, but the totals are so encouraging!    Especially when I get discouraged now that the weight-loss is slowing down.
The great news is that my diabetes is now gone and my PCOS is resolving.  Also, my sleep apnea is a thing of the past, as is the c-pap machine that I hated to sleep with!  I can now run up and down my stairs without huffing and puffing and exercise is no longer torture.  Don't get me wrong, I still hate exercising, but I do it anyway.  It just doesn't hurt like it use to!
I've been to see my surgeon, Dr. Hitchcock, for my 1-week, 1-month, and 3-month follow up appointments and will see him again in September.  Each time, he is happy with my progress.  I've had no problems, so far, but I'm pretty cautious in what I choose to eat.  My blood work at my last appointment showed low levels of potassium and iron, so I'm taking extra supplements for those things, now.  Last week's blood tests show normal levels for all things tested.  I'm pretty regimented in taking my supplements, so I don't worry too much about that.
I'm adjusting to my personal life, too.  My husband told me about 1 month before my surgery that he was no longer happy in our marriage and wanted a divorce.  The divorce has been finalized since then.  Our kids seem to be adjusting well.  Of course, it's not easy, but life must move on.  Being a single mom was not in my life plan, but my kids are the best, so we are doing just fine.

One Month Out

Mar 12, 2008

I went to KC yesterday to see Dr. Hitchcock for my 1 month follow-up appointment.  All is great.  A little low on iron and vitamin D, which means more daily supplements.  I was diabetic before surgery and Dr H now confirms that I am no longer diabetic!  I also lost a total of 35 pounds since surgery.  Woo Hoo!  My only challenge at this time is getting in enough water.  I am drinking at least 6 glasses, but have trouble getting in numbers 7 and 8.  Crystal Light seems to help.  Dr. H says that this will improve with time, so "time will tell", I suppose.  I did get to add veggies and fruit to my diet this week, so I have tried green beans and banana.  Yummy!  Can't wait to try something new tomorrow!

Progress

Mar 05, 2008

Well, it's been 3 weeks since my surgery.  I was worried for about 3 days, as the weight loss seemed to have stalled.  I was doing nothing differenly, so it was hard to understand.  Much relieved, as I had lost 2 more pounds when I weighed today!  That brings me to a total of 30 pounds since surgery!  I lost 50 pounds in the 9 months prior to surgery, when I began my journey.  That brings me to a total of 80 pounds lost!  WOW!  I hope to keep on keeping on, as I still have a long way to go before I reach my goal.
