I have lost a total of 72 pounds!

July 22nd 2008

I haven't posted in a really long time!  The weight loss has been really slow since my lapband surgery, but all in all, I'm glad I did it.  I have lost 42 pounds!...and still losing...slowly but surely.

JANUARY 15th 2007

Today is post-op day 10.  I had lost 18 lbs, but when I started my soft diet at day 7, I gained two pounds, which I feel okay about.  I think that 18 pounds in one week was too rapid.  I expected to be fully healed by this time, which is not the case at all.  I still feel very sore, especially the area my port is in.  My only negative experience so far is that I do not feel like my food intake is restricted.  I haven't tried, but I feel like I could eat the same today as I could pre-op.  This morning I had two scrambled eggs, one piece of toast, and a glass of OJ without feeling "full".  I hope I'm not doing anything wrong.  Maybe I just need a fill?

Everything went great!  I'm hurting, but the surgery went well.  Will write more later.

JANUARY 5th 2007

I have been overweight basically all of my life.  I have struggled, like most people, with a poor self-image due to my obesity.  But hopefully, that is soon to change.

About a year ago, my general practitioner started me on phentermine to help me lose weight.  It worked!  I lost about 30 pounds and have managed to keep most of that off.  But somehow I can't seem to lose anymore.  For years I have been considering WLS, but it seemed unobtainable due to cost. (I have never had insurance that was willing to cover it).  But recently I have graduated from nursing school (WHOO-HOO!), and have scrounged up enough pennies to have the less costly and less invasive Lapband surgery

Another nurse at the hospital (Amy) recently had her surgery in Monterrey Mexico.  At first I thought she was crazy, but the more she told me about having her surgery there, the more I thought that maybe I too could go there for mine.  I live in Oklahoma, and I talked with many doctors around my area about the costs of surgery.  The cheapest they could do lapband surgery was $15,000!  Like I said before, I was saving up every penny to pay out of pocket and this amount of money seemed gastronomical to me.  I could finance it, but I didn't want to be tied down to debt.  So when Amy told me that her surgery cost $7,900 dollars in Mexico, I was intrigued to say the least.

I contacted Angelika who works for Dr. Rodriguez to begin learning about him.  He is more than qualified...having done over 4,000 lapband surgeries over a 10 year period.  Because of this, and because Amy had such a good experience, I too decided I would go to Mexico to have lapband.

Amy had her surgery within 10 days of contacting Dr. R.  I needed a bit more time, so I scheduled mine for 6 wks after I first made contact.

I will be having my surgery January 5th, 2007.  As I sit, this is January 3rd, and I cannot tell you how fast the time has flown by.  I can't believe that in just a couple more days I will be well on my way to a thinner and healthier me.

The best part about my surgery is that my little sister will be having it too!  She is 5'7" and 360 pounds, so we both need to lose a massive amount of weight.  I'm glad that we will be working together to lose the weight.  It's always better to have a buddy.
