I have always been a Big Guy! I played football in High School and College and was able to eat pretty much anything I wanted because I then went out and worked it off. After College, I kept up the eating habits but dropped the “worked it off” part of the formula. In 2003 I had my first bout of pancreatitis due to my sky-high triglycerides and was diagnosed with diabetes as well. I started taking care of that with Glucophage and my diet. It worked for awhile.
In 2004 I was going through a separation and divorce and pretty much stopped taking care of my diabetes. I kept my weight down but the diabetes was getting out of control. I met my current wife in 2005 (May 19th, to be exact) and I’m not sure how it happened but my weight started going back up again.
In 2007 I had my next bout of pancreatitis due to out of control triglycerides and with that wake-up call began to take better care of my diabetes. Being on insulin 24/7 caused my weight to balloon back up.
Fast forward to 2009: my Endocrinologist suggested I consider weight loss surgery. I contacted my Insurance company and was approved almost immediately due to my BMI and co-morbidity factors (diabetes, borderline high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea) and I was off and running!
I had my operation on 11/30/09. I am off of all medications and only have to take vitamins now. I need to buy new clothes but I figure I can handle that. I am now the poster child for the benefits of this surgery and will gladly give my story to anyone that wants to listen. This operation saved my life.
